"Israeli aircraft struck the main highway linking Beirut to the Syrian capital Damascus early on Friday, a Lebanese security source said.

The jets struck at least five separate times along different points of the international route, the source said.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties and witnesses said the road was clear of traffic after earlier congestion as tourists fled Lebanon to neighboring Syria.

Israeli officials said on Thursday that Israeli forces planned to strike the key highway as part of an assault aimed at retrieving two soldiers seized by Lebanese Hizbullah guerrillas.

Israel had already bombed Lebanon’s airports and blockaded the country from the sea, bringing trade and tourism to a halt."

1. Not stated, but implied...
is that it also slows down Syrian military response.

How long until Syria enters the conflict? And IIRC Syria and Iran have a mutual defense pact don't they?

2. Notice that the rationale is attacking states that support terrorists.
Exactly like NeoCon policy and it's not by coincidence. NeoCons think it's just tough shit if it escalates the likelihood of regional war, because in the end the greater good of hegemonic power is served.

Let's not do the extension of the implications. Let's not consider that if the model is to attack the state that supports another political body's enemy, then we did we must assume that Israel just ratcheted up the likelihood that US citizens will be the target of extreme elements worldwide supporting Hamas and Hezbolla... Let's not consider that the US government has pushed hard, with some success to gain political leverage in Lebanon and the Israeli bombing Lebanon ruins all our efforts.

Let's just celebrate the possibility that war in the ME could fulfill Biblical prophecy. Maybe the NeoCons and Fundies could invent a drink so we can toast anew Armageddon and the end times.
