Fear and loathing as rockets reach further into Israel
Inigo Gilmore, Nahariya and Rory McCarthy, Jerusalem
July 15, 2006

FIRST came the whistling, whooshing noise, then two earth-shuddering bangs. The rockets had landed and people started running in panic.

The loudhailers around Nahariya Hospital erupted. "Go to the bunkers," they barked in Hebrew. A handful of workers, taking a break after helping the wounded from an earlier rocket barrage, rushed back inside as dark smoke swirled through the hospital grounds.

Hezbollah has launched more than 130 Katyusha rockets into northern Israel in two days in one of its largest attacks, the Israeli military said.

<snip>

The probable target of the rocket barrage on Majd al-Krum was the neighbouring Jewish town of Karmiel. Both are more than 16 kilometres south of the border, beyond the usual range of Hezbollah attacks. But on Thursday night, the coastal town of Haifa, which is 28 kilometres south of the Lebanese frontier, was hit for the first time.

<snip>

But no one in the hospital or Nahariya city had a clear idea of what they wanted the Israeli Government or the military to do. They just wanted the rockets to stop.

2. Yep, it's a very normal reaction...
When I read the last bit of that article about them just wanting the rockets to stop, it reminded me of a thread in here a week or so back where someone insisted that the Palestinians in Gaza are somehow wrong for wanting the attacks on them to stop, but they should be reacting by blaming their own govt for Israeli missiles being fired at them....

4. People are forgetting recent history...
Irael was not willing to give up territory for years becasue it was afraid of just this...weapons being fired at their populace. They held southern Lebanon and other places for years to prevent this from happening. They let some land go, and now the land hawks/settlers are claiming they were right all along.

Not agreeing with *anyone* involved in this fracas, but Israel internally will have a lot harder time giving back territory this time around.

They let some land go, and now the land hawks/settlers are claiming they were right all along....unfortuantly they were...unless one wants to ignore 6 years of attacks by hizballa on israelis northern border and continuous kassams from gaza ever since israel left....

a quote of a typical israeli today:

I spent Wednesday morning talking to some hard-core left-wing Israelis. The thoughts they shared with me were quite clear: Hit them hard. Hezbollah, Beirut, Syria, whoever.

5. Think that is backward, Israel will take a harder position now and later
These actions play right into the hands of the settlers and war hawks. For years the story has been, if the occupied territories stayed in Israeli hands, then the terrorists could not launch weapons that would strike Israeli cities. They can now say "Now that the Government forced us out and allowed the PA to actually be something other an a gov in exile, look what happened." The more rockets that land, the more entrenched Israel will become.
