US plans jet-fuel sale to Israel
US plans jet-fuel sale to Israel
Fri Jul 14, 2006 11:02 PM BST

By Jim Wolf

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon notified Congress on Friday of plans to sell Israel jet fuel valued at up to $210 million (114 million pounds) "to keep peace and security in the region."

"The proposed sale of the JP-8 aviation fuel will enable Israel to maintain the operational capability of its aircraft inventory," the Pentagon's Defence Security Cooperation Agency said in notice required by law.

It said Israel had requested the sale, but did not say when the request was made.

The move was announced after Israeli aircraft rocketed runways at Beirut's international airport and blasted the main Beirut-Damascus highway, tightening an air, sea and land blockade of Lebanon.

Israel is seeking to force the release of two Israeli soldiers and halt cross-border rocket strikes by Hizbollah fighters backed by Syria and Iran.

"The jet fuel will be consumed while (Israel's) aircraft (are) in use to keep peace and security in the region," the notice to Congress said.

1. ""to keep peace and security in the region"
Sounds pretty Orwellian to me.

4. You realise they didn't write the article they posted?
They don't seem to have been trying to make any point, just posting an article...

5. Besides the Orwellian note
which I posted at the same time you were posting...

Things that are interesting about it -

- it's another indication of US support of Israel's aggression (goes along w/ http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=124&topic_id=134728&mesg_id=134728 ) - I don't expect there will be stories about how we are supplying Hezbollah for instance (even though some people were trying to insist that we are supplying both sides of the conflict)

- resources we sell are not available to us - some people might want to consider such effects - esp. if there end up being stories about shortages of such things

- it's a story that was showing up in uk news on the subject - so it's something that people in other countries find to be relevant
