Rockets hit northern Israeli city of Haifa
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 01:29 AM by cal04
Several rockets launched by Lebanese guerillas hit the northern Israeli city of Haifa on Sunday, Israeli police and emergency officials said.

Rockets also hit the northern town of Acco. The rocket attacks came after a relatively quiet night along
Israel's northern border, which had been pounded by hundreds of rockets fired from Lebanon in recent days. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

1. Looks like Israel bit off a little more than they could chew
this time. This isn't the 6 day war.

Maybe they'll start talking peace rather than military might (paid for by U.S. taxpayers).

I don't think the right wing talk host will advertise his upcoming cruise to Tiberius again any time soon.

5. Hizbollah rockets Haifa in Israel, eight killed
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 02:03 AM by Englander
By Alaa Shahine

BEIRUT, July 16 (Reuters) - Hizbollah fired rockets at the Israeli city of Haifa on Sunday, killing eight people, as Israel pursued a devastating assault in Lebanon aimed at crippling the Shi'ite Muslim group.

Israeli medics said more than a dozen people had also been wounded in Haifa, Israel's third largest city. It was hit by at least five rockets, including one that struck a train station.

Hizbollah claimed responsibility for the rocket salvo, which it said was retaliation for Israel's killing of civilians and destruction of Lebanese infrastructure.

Israeli air raids shook Beirut overnight on the fifth day of a bombardment that has prompted no U.N. Security Council action and only a mild plea for restraint from Israel's U.S. ally.

7. The target was a shiite Muslim group
Yet, some say Israel is out there trying to give the Lebanese freedom. Just like we are to the Iraqis.

What a joke.

6. Lebanon had called for a truce and a cease fire
Israel, Blair, and W turned them down. The blood is on their hands.

And the right wing talk hosts soliciting for a cruise to Tiberius is rethinking his plans.

9. Apalling
I expected it from Bush but not from Blair. At least Putin is showing some leadership on behalf of peace.

11. the problem with Lebanon calling for a ceasefire...
is that implies that they have control of Hezbollah.

If they do, then they are responsible for the rocket attacks/kidnappings.

If they don't, then they are as powerless to agree to a ceasefire as you are.

If Lebanon could come out of this with their own military being allowed to occupy their own southern border, then there may be a chance for long term peace. If Hezbollah continues to own southern Lebanon, then the rocket attacks will continue sometime in the future and this will all be repeated again.

13. Halutz: Part of rocket that hit Haifa train depot made in Syria
Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz, IDF Chief of General Staff, reported in a cabinet meeting that "part of the rocket that hit the Haifa train depot was made in Syria." According to Halutz, thus far 1,400 rockets have been launched at Israel, most of them mortars. 900 of those have been aimed at IDF forces or targets on the northern border.

Additionally, the Chief of General Staff said that the IDF is operating currently to take out rocket-launching sites, adjacent to southern Lebanon villages. (Ronny Sofer)

15. Rockets kill 9 in Israel
A couple places say nine dead, no explanation for it.

JERUSALEM - A barrage of rockets fired by Hezbollah guerrillas pounded the northern Israeli city of Haifa today, killing nine people and wounding many others, police said.

The attack was the worst strike on Israel since violence broke out along the border with Lebanon last week. Rockets fired by Lebanese militants also hit the northern town of Acco, and residents of the region were told to head to bomb shelters.

At least five rockets hit Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, police said. Some landed in the residential area of Hadar, and others hit near the city's major oil refinery and large gas storage tanks by the city's port area, police said. Hezbollah's television station, Al-Manar, said the guerillas were targeting the refinery.
