Shakira: Stop The War in Lebanon
http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=66870

Colombian pop star Shakira, whose father is from Lebanon, called for a cease fire in the country, which is torn to shreds by Israeli bombings.

"So many mothers and children are dying every day and that's something we cannot tolerate, not today, not in the 21st century," said the singer before performing at a concert in Athens.

"I want to call (on) the US leaders to stop this war, because we all know that they can stop it," she said.

"I just hope that there is a diplomatic and international intervention right away, I think it's necessary."

to stop the carnage in Lebanon. It is what Dr. Martin Luther King would have wanted, it is what Ghandi would have wanted, and it is what His Holiness the Dalai Lama wants, Nelson Mandela wants.

3. You're absolutely right but
the way I see it, Americans listen to two things:

- Money

- Hot Girls

Shakira coming out against the war might just be what it takes!

5. But...
If Israel ceases fire, only Lebanese stop dying. Israelis will still die.

So while the number of dead overall will go down...what interest does Israel have in such a bargain?

6. How do you figure?
Hezbollah had to kill some soldiers to get those Israeli soldiers, but once they had them they weren't attacking anymore. They wanted the prisoner exchange. Why would you think more Israeli's would die?

9. "Stop That Shit!"
July 22-23, 2006

"Stop That Shit!"

By URI AVNERY

31 years ago, when the Lebanese civil war was at its height, the Syrians sent their army into Lebanon (invited, of all people, by the Christians). At the time, the then Minister of Defense Shimon Peres and his associates created hysteria in Israel. They demanded that Israel deliver an ultimatum to the Syrians, to prevent them from reaching the Israeli border. Yitzhak Rabin, the Prime Minister, told me then that that was sheer nonsense, because the best that could happen to Israel was for the Syrian army to spread out along the border. Only thus could calm be assured, the same calm that reigned along our border with Syria.

However, Rabin gave in to the hysteria of the media and stopped the Syrians far from the border. The vacuum thus created was filled by the PLO. In 1982, Ariel Sharon pushed the PLO out, and the vacuum was filled by Hizbullah.

All that has happened there since then would not have happened if we had allowed the Syrians to occupy the border from the beginning. The Syrians are cautious, they do not act recklessly.

13. Who cares?
Why defend butchery?

Israel's interests might be to protect its people (so what...that's a given in any country...nothing special), but it's Israel's other interests of regional conquest and expansion, which can be legitmately opposed.

And should be

8. good question
I doubt it, though. The majority of her fans are from South America, and worldwide. Also, her songs aren't heard on Country radio.
