Garbage collection adapts to arduous circumstances

BEIRUT: The Sukleen waste disposal company, one of the jewels of the Hariri-era reconstruction campaign, has lost almost 2,000 of its employees in the past month. The company has fallen victim to evacuations and Israel's unremitting bombing and shelling of Lebanon's roads.

The company is still determined to maintain a level of hygiene and normalcy within Beirut and the Mount Lebanon regions, though, according to Sukleen managing director Anthony Kurban.

"Logistically speaking, some areas are very dangerous to work in. Instead of collecting five or six times a day, we've been forced to cut back to two or three times," said Kurban. But the company is "alert to what's going on."

"On several occasions we've been forced to delay collection by a few hours due to heavy bombardment, but we always return back to work eventually, once it's guaranteed the area is secure."
