Israel appoints coordinator of possible war with Iran: newspaper
Israel appoints coordinator of possible war with Iran: newspaper
Aug 25, 2006, 12:43 GMT

Tel Aviv - Israeli Army Chief of Staff Dan Halutz has appointed a top Israeli officer to be in charge of preparing a possible war with Iran, the Ha'aretz daily reported Friday, quoting a security official.

Air Force Commander Eliezer Shkedy is to manage Israel's armed forces if war breaks out and is responsible for preparing battle plans, the daily said.

The paper pointed out that the appointment was made before this summer's crisis with Lebanon, which has led many Israelis to accuse their political and military leadership of having failed to prepare adequately for the possibility of another war in Lebanon.

The security official told Ha'aretz that the appointment was an implementation of lessons from the 1991 Gulf War, during which the Israeli army did not have a 'campaign manager' for Iraq.

1. Is this not justification for Iran to do the 'preliminary strike'
thing? I mean, Israel is intentionally stirring up a shitload of trouble. Why can't they be taken out like Iraq was? There would at least be an element of truth to the excuse this time.

2. I wonder if this has anything to do with...
...this story:

<snip>
The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option. As in the case of Iraq, the response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States. Several senior Air Force officers involved in the planning are reportedly appalled at the implications of what they are doing—that Iran is being set up for an unprovoked nuclear attack—but no one is prepared to damage his career by posing any objections. 4. I wonder who the "capture" volunteers are?
If Israel starts this war they are lusting after, we can kiss our soldiers in Iraq goodbye. They will be sitting ducks.

That's an interesting remark. Sort of implies that this planning is being done in preparation for a U.S. attack on Iran.

6. Phase one of the war on Iran has already failed
the attack on Hizbollah and the bombing of Lebanon was part of the US/Israel plans for war on Iran. Despite the failure of this phase of the war, the war planners in the Pentagon and Jerusalem are proceeding at full speed on this version of Operation Barbarossa (and we know how that one ended).
