Abbas orders payment of wages to PA workers

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has ordered payments of NIS 1,500 apiece to PA employees, to cover a portion of their unpaid salaries, Rafik al-Husseini, Abbas' bureau chief, said yesterday.

The partial payment was ordered after Qatar and Saudi Arabia donated funds to the PA.

Long lines formed outside banks in Gaza City yesterday as PA employees waited to receive their salaries.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of PA police and security officers blocked all the main roads in Gaza City with garbage containers and burning tires in a protest against unpaid wages. Policemen fired their rifles into the air and overturned garbage bins, causing the rubbish to spill out. They also used broken concrete to halt the traffic.
