FWIW, I think the Rabbi is within his rights, as are those who call for boycotts of Israel, or Iran, Hamas, or various other entities. That said, these things fail most of the time.

This is also intesting in that it shows a certain divisive effect from the Second Lebanon War.

A prominent Acre rabbi on Sunday called on the city's Jewish residents to boycott the arab sector in the wake of violence that erupted between yeshiva students and Arab youths over the Simhat Torah holiday.

Rabbi Yossi Stern, of the Ruach Tzfonit Yeshiva, made the statement during a conference attended by a number of imporant rabbis, including Safed Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, who deemed it "forbidden to sell or rent homes to Arabs."

Ruach Tzfonit is part of the hesder program, which combines military service with Torah study.

The yeshiva students claim that Arab youths provoked them while they were celebrating the holiday, prompting a security guard to fire into the air in response. The Arabs involved in the incident, however, maintained that it was the yeshiva students that taunted them.

1. I think this move will do nothing but make matters worse.

I think boycotts on a national level, for political reasons has it's place. But forbidding Jews from selling or renting to Arabs in their own neighbourhood can been seen as inciting racial tension and little else.
