Annan: UNIFIL exposed 13 cases of illegal arms possession
The United Nations has documented 13 incidents of illegal possession of arms in southern Lebanon since early September, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Friday, calling Beirut's border monitoring deficient.

UN Security Council resolutions have called on Lebanon to disarm all militias on its soil, including Hezbollah guerrillas, and banned all unauthorized arms in Lebanon.

But Annan, in an eight-page status report to the UN Security Council, said there were "significant deficiencies" in equipment, training and coordination among four different Lebanese government services responsible for the borders.

"It is plain that there is a need for bilateral assistance to the government to enhance its border security capabilities," Annan wrote, asking nations to help Beirut.

1. I am not sure why this seems funny to me ....
Not the situation, of course, which is horrifying; but the posting here, and how it represents an unspoken but absolute hypocrisy .....

I'll have MY goose cooked with gander sauce, if you dont mind .....

I will not participate any further ....

3. It is interesting that the border control being contemplated here
Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 09:50 AM by bemildred
is in the nature of keeping certain parties in, rather than keeping anyone out. The issue is the Lebanese government's ability to control its own population, rather than any expectation that it should defend its territory against invasion and attack from outside. But then, UNIFIL is already an infringement of Lebanese sovereignty, by its presence, by its mission.
