Hamas pushes offensive against Fatah in Gaza

GAZA CITY (AFP) - A huge blast levelled a major Fatah post in southern Gaza on Wednesday as Hamas tried to defeat its military rivals amid warnings the deadly showdown could lead to an all-out Palestinian civil war.

The headquarters of the pro-Fatah preventive security force in Khan Yunis was "totally destroyed" after a bomb exploded in a tunnel underneath, said its chief, Yussef Eissa.

And Hamas wants to be recognized as "legitimate", in charge of its own state, controlling the greatest per captia foriegn aid on Earth, and with the world giving it a free hand to attack Israel whenever it sees fit! Give me a break. Yes, they were elected by the Palestinan people, who thought that no thugs could be as bad as the corrupt Fatah thugs. Wrong. Why is it that at every major political junction the Palestinian people seem to make the worst choice? And still there are many who harbour the fantasy of destroying Israel and ending the occupation (of Tel Aviv, Haifa, Ashkelon, etc.) - not least among the hardened killers of Hamas who think that any atrocity is justified if in the end it might kill a Jew. Maybe if the Palestinians kill enough of each other they will get sick of it all.

But the answer is not just to get sick of violence (for now) - it is necessary to build a positive view of peace. That means getting rid of the textbooks full of hate and delegitimizing of Israel, which Fatah does just as much as Hamas, and moving away from the death cult that the Palestinians have inflicted on themselves. Maybe then, in a generation or two, the Palestinans will be ready.

1. You make a very important point
"Why is it that at every major political junction the Palestinian people seem to make the worst choice?"

My understanding of the educational system of the Palestinians is that for the past 30 years it is based on political propaganda and hate, courtesy of Yassir Arafat and friends. Arafat destroyed these people. If they can't kill Israelis, they turn on one another. This will not be resolved or go away any time soon.

Western politicians (possibly motivated by a desire to have a place in history) have tried to work this out to no avail. It may be the only smart thing that the Bush Administration has done and that is not to waste time and effort on this. Subsidizing whoever is in charge there only serves to keep this problem going. Yes, that's a pretty awful comment, but that's how it is.

3. I think there will be very little, if any, chance of peace now.
