A United Nations military observer sent e-mails home to Canada reporting that Israel was bombing schools and waging "a campaign of terror against the Lebanese people" shortly before he was killed by an Israeli bomb in Lebanon, said his widow.

Maj. Paeta Hess-von Kruedener of Kingston, Ont., a member of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, was one of four UN military observers who died when the Israeli Defence Forces bombed a marked United Nations post on July 25, 2006.

Cynthia Hess-von Kruedener said she believes her husband, Paeta, and three other UN observers were specifically targeted when their post was bombed by Israel.Cynthia Hess-von Kruedener said she believes her husband, Paeta, and three other UN observers were specifically targeted when their post was bombed by Israel.

Cynthia Hess-von Kruedener said her husband's mission was to report on the hostilities in the area and she believes that is why Israeli forces attacked the Israeli United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) post, despite Israel's claims that the bombing was accidental.

"Obviously they were unhappy with what they were observing. Maybe that post was in the way as well," she said. "I know my husband was reporting war crimes. And I guess they don't want to deal with that."

2. PM must press Israel for answers on bombing

Editorial

PM must press Israel for answers on bombing

The Canadian government won't do it. But Canadians must condemn the Israeli government and military for its cover-up in the death of Kingston soldier Maj. Paeta Hess-Von Kruedener.

Hess-von Kruedener's widow, Cynthia, has suggested the Israelis may be guilty of what's tantamount to murder.

She's pushing Prime Minister Stephen Harper to introduce the findings of the board of inquiry that looked into her husband's death to the House of Commons for discussion - so far, to no avail. Her fear is that other Canadian peacekeepers and observers around the world might suffer the same fate.

The circumstances leading up to Maj. Hess-von Kruedener's death are certainly suspicious.

He was in a fortified Lebanese observation outpost on July 25, 2006, along with three other United Nations personnel, when it was hit by a bunker-busting bomb. Israeli artillery had been shelling the post for six hours, despite calls from the observers themselves to hold off. The bunker was well-known to the Israelis, having been there for 60 years.

That evening, Israelis levelled the post with a bomb specifically designed for penetrating fortified structures. There could no mistaking the target or what they were trying to achieve - its destruction.

Thanks for posting that. Israeli leadership obviously has a serious agenda. Anyone getting in their way, well.... the message is clear.
