Jewish leader calls Evangelists 'extremists'
Leader of Reform Judaism in US Eric Yoffie says movement mustn't work with Christian Zionist pastor John Hagee because latter rejects Israeli land concessions to achieve peace with Palestinians, disparages other religions

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3527078,00.html

<snip>

"The leader of the largest branch of American Judaism said Wednesday that synagogues in the movement shouldn't work with the Rev. John Hagee, a Christian Zionist, calling him an "extremist" on Israeli policy who disparages other faiths.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the liberal Union for Reform Judaism, said Hagee and his group, Christians United For Israel, reject any Israeli land concessions to achieve peace with the Palestinians.

Reform Judaism supports creating a Palestinian state; Hagee sees a biblical mandate for the territory so End Times prophecy can be fulfilled.

Yoffie also condemned Hagee's views on Roman Catholicism and Islam. The San Antonio pastor has suggested that Catholic anti-Semitism shaped Adolf Hitler, among other comments."

7. I doubt it very much...
I don't think Reform Jews in general, or Yoffie in particular, would appreciate Hagee much.

2. Reform Jews are always reaching out to other faiths
I've attended Shabbot performed by a Reform rabbi, and I know Reform Jews who join in the Dances of Universal Peace. I could see where these folks would have trouble with a fundamentalist like Hagee--sort of like the Sufis having trouble with the ayotollahs in Iran.

6. Rabbi Yoffie is a reasonable man
I would hardly have expected him to find any common ground with nutcase Hagee; but it's good that he's openly telling Hagee where to get off; the more people do so, the better!

8. Evangelist Hagee pledges $6 million to Israel
Rally held by group founded by controversial American Christian leader backs Israeli sovereignty over entire unified capital while donating millions to public causes. 'Turning part or all of Jerusalem over to the Palestinians would be tantamount to turning it over to the Taliban,' Hagee says

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3528404,00.html

<snip>

"American Evangelist John Hagee on Sunday announced donations of $6 million to a number of Israeli causes and declared that Israel must remain in control of all of Jerusalem.

Hagee, who has been in the news lately for his endorsement of US Presidential candidate John McCain and his criticism of the Catholic Church, brought hundreds of backers on a solidarity trip to Israel.

Hagee's group, Christians United for Israel, held a colorful rally at Jerusalem's convention center. The mostly American audience waved Israeli flags and cheered as Hagee joined keynote speaker Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader of Israel's hardline opposition Likud party, to insist Jerusalem remain united and under Jewish control.

"Turning part or all of Jerusalem over to the Palestinians would be tantamount to turning it over to the Taliban," Hagee said. Palestinians claim the eastern part of the city, captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war, as the capital of their future state."
