Final footage of Reuters journalist killed in Gaza
(reposting without the image stills)

(Warning: the video footage above contains images of a graphic nature)

The editor-in-chief of Reuters demanded that Israel launches a "thorough and immediate investigation" into the killing of one of its cameramen in the Gaza Strip yesterday (David Byers writes).

Footage of Fadel Shana, 23, being killed by a tank shell in the Gaza Strip has been released by the news agency, which said that the cameraman was hit despite clear markings that showed him to be a journalist.

After medical examinations of Shana's body, Reuters said that Israel had used a controversial type of tank shell which scatters metal darts, or flechettes, around the surrounding area after exploding, risking civilian casualties. Israel refused to comment on the report, but stated that the weapons were not illegal.

Fadel Shana, 23, was among 20 Palestinian militants and civilians — among them five children — killed in a surge of bloodshed following the deaths of three Israeli soldiers in a gun-battle in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday morning.

According to colleagues at the scene, Shana's clearly marked media vehicle was attacked again about two minutes after the first missile struck it, driving back would-be rescuers and injuring several.

The incident came as journalists and ambulance crews tried to cover the aftermath of an earlier Israeli air strike that killed three militants and at least six civilians, including a woman and two children, near Gaza's border with Israel.

2. None of those responses . .
. . at least the ones that I posted, were offered as excuses or denials. They were reasons why your clear and insistent accusation of murder was baseless. They were all stated with the caveat that I have no idea what really happened . . but before people start accusing others of murder, more information would normally be needed - in a civil discussion, at least.

3. That's your opinion
I have mine, which I feel is the clear and obvious choice, that this was calculated murder.

Furthermore, there is plenty to base it on. Namely, we have a video of the killing machine targeting and hitting the intended victim, Fadel Shana along with two civilian bystanders. We also have a past history of murdering journalists and peace activists. Finally, we have witnesses all corroborating on both the first attack on Shana and the second attack targeting the crowd that gathered to attempt to help him.

The charge of murder is far from a baseless claim.

that a tank kills a group of people about 2km away .....you have further proof that the gunner in the tank targetd and hit additional people......(btw a tank is a killing machine, thats what its designed for)

isnt that what happens in a war?...people get killed intentionally

since you are so intent on the murder charge..what does the IDF gunner say?... the tank commander?

or are western democratic rules of justice no longer applicable because.....(you can fill in the blank)_____________________________

4. Something that did occur to me

as you pointed there was an investigation of the death of James Miller done the British, because (obviously) he was British, however Fadel Shana was Palestinian and from Khan Younis to boot, a factor that could be used to severly muddy any investigation, especially if done by the Palestinians. There the Israeli's can rest assured that no "reliable" investigation will done, other than their own.

6. Rights group: IDF must ban shell that killed cameraman in Gaza
<snip>

"An investigation into the death of a Palestinian cameraman who was killed Wednesday in the Gaza Strip revealed that he had been hit by a Flechette shell fired from an Israel Defense Forces tank, prompting the human rights group B'Tselem to reiterate their demand to discontinue the use of this fatal type of munition.

The Flechette shell explodes in the air and releases thousands of metal darts which disperse in a conical arch three hundred meters long and some ninety meters wide. The use of this type of shell increases the likelihood that someone other than the target will be hit by the shell's darts, thus endangering innocent civilians.

Fadel Shana, 23, was working for the news agency Reuters filming Israeli tanks when he was killed. Two other Palestinian civilians were also killed in the same incident.

In a statement, B'Tselem demanded Thursday that the Military Advocate General "immediately issue instructions to suspend the use of this deplorable form of munition in the Gaza Strip, and launch a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident." The human rights organization maintains that over the past seven years, at least 18 Palestinians were killed by Flechette shells in the Gaza Strip, and at least 11 of them were civilians.

Israel has drawn harsh criticism in the past over its determination to continue using Flechette shells. These shells have been denounced globally due to their dangerously wide range."
