GuardianIsrael warned the Lebanese government yesterday that it would be held responsible for any further attacks, after an unidentified group fired four Katyusha rockets across the border early in the morning. The rockets, fired from a valley between the villages of Dhaira and Tayra, two miles from the border, hit a nursing home at Nahariya, injuring two civilians. Residents on both sides of the border took shelter. Israeli fighter jets flew low over the area and the Lebanese army stepped up patrols and declared a state of emergency.
Hezbollah denied that it was involved, but the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine would neither confirm nor deny responsibility.
Observers suggested Lebanon-based groups were testing Israel's resolve and readiness to defend a second front. Amal Saad-Ghorayeb, a political scientist at the Lebanese American University, said: "They are slowly sending out feelers. They would see it as their duty to intervene if Hamas was on the verge of collapse, because that would represent the defeat of the Palestinian cause."
