srael's war on the Gaza Strip has now killed more than 1,000 Palestinians, the head of emergency services in the territory said on Wednesday.

"The number of martyrs has reached 1,001," Muawiya Hassanein told AFP.

More than 4,580 people have also been wounded since Israel launched Operation Cast Lead on the Hamas-run territory on December 27, Hassanein added.

2. For some perspective on those numbers...
From September 29, 2000 - November 30, 2008 (2,982 days), 1,062 Israeli civilians and soldiers have been killed by Palestinians.

From December 29, 2008 - January 14, 2009 (16 days), 1,001+ Palestinian civilians and combatants have been killed by Israelis.

3. How many Palestinians were killed from 2000-2008?
Link for the other numbers please.

And this for perspective as well:

Rockets during the cease-fire did not come from Hamas, Israel admits. Cease-fires work. Wars do not.

4. Using the language, "the number of martyrs" is not helpful
to their interests.

"Martyrs" has a very negative meaning to most people in the West, and implies that these people died in the name of Allah.

Wrong.

Maybe the foolish militants did, but the little kids sure as hell didn't.

8. They see it as a holy war though- since the conflict is directly related to religion
Yes- the word is disturbing to us, but that is their terminology.

11. Anyone who is murdered by an outsider in that culture is automatically considered a martyr.

Doesn't mean they're raging terrorists. It just goes a long way to help those greiving with all of the death and destruction happening around them, lest they go absolutely insane trying to cope. Too bad if the West is ignorant to that. Too fucking bad.

17. Oh Hamas are raging terrorists. You must have a wild
definition of what you consider a raging terrorist, if you exempt Hamas.

19. And you must have a wild definition of who you consider to be Hamas.
We're talking about the civilian casualties here buddy. 1,001 dead and a significant number, if not a majority, had NOTHING to do with Hamas.

20. You're kidding right? It's completely because of Hamas.
I'm not going to include in the casualty figures the number of rocket firers the IDF has taken out, which is reportedly half of that figure.

You are living on Pluto if you think Israel starting hitting Hamas for no reason.

21. Oh, they think it is all a big "genocide"
(despite the fact that Israel could have taken out the entire Palestinian population 60 years ago, and if they were really serious about genocide, they would have done a LOT better than killing 1000 people in two weeks---should have been like 100,000, if it were going to be a "true" genocide).

:sarcasm:

23. Dig up some of Obama's youtube comments about Hamas
and then come back and tell me who's off base.

He explains it more eloquently than I.

24. Obama is also off base. He is not a Mideast expert, is he, but a politician.
There are plenty of credible sources who are not politicians and who know better than Obama. Go watch Amy Goodman's show today. She had world class experts on who laid it out very clearly.

27. If you have the stomach, also watch today's episode of "Mosaic".
It is a compilation of newscasts in the Middle East and can be streamed. I think it's about 30 minutes. The show is put on as a project of LinkTv and has no editorializing at all.

...at least when posting on this forum. It's just too goddamned hypocritical. Human rights for gays, not for Gazans.

Israelis 'shot at fleeing Gazans'

Claims have been received by the BBC and an Israeli human rights group that Israeli troops have fired on Gaza residents trying to escape the conflict area. Israel has strongly denied the allegations.

BBC journalists in Gaza and Israel have compiled detailed accounts of the claims.

Some Palestinian civilians in Gaza say Israeli forces shot at them as they tried to leave their homes - in some cases bearing white flags.

very bad situation.

Lack of water, food, supplies and means to deliver them to a population of 1.5 million. What a tragedy.
