Palestinians pledge era of unity
Edited on Thu Feb-26-09 01:54 PM by azurnoir
Leaders of the rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah have said they are entering a new era of reconciliation, after talks in Cairo.

Delegations from each side, and other Palestinian groups, have agreed to set up committees to look at forming a unity government and holding elections.

The idea is to form an interim unity government that would prepare for new presidential and legislative elections and co-ordinate the rebuilding of Gaza.

1. This is the most encouraging news to come from the Middle East in years.
I wonder what influence, if any, the Obama administration has had in this. Obviously it is to their benefit to avoid any overt role in this type of delicate negotiation, so even if they did play one, they would be wise to make this seem entirely a product of the Palestinians.

PA: US okays Hamas-Fatah government

The Obama administration has given the Palestinian Authority a "green light" to talk to Hamas about forming a Palestinian unity government, a PA official in Ramallah said over the weekend.

4. Maybe this unity government will work out
Unlike the last one, that broke apart because the Bush administration decided to arm Fatah, which Hamas got wind of and a civil war ensued.
