Beit Shemesh rabbis issue modesty rules
City's religious and secular residents find booklets in their mailboxes instructing women to keep hair tied, wear long-sleeved shirts and skirts without slit

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3734609,00.html

<snip>

"A rabbis' committee in Beit Shemesh distributed over the weekend a detailed booklet instructing female residents to dress modestly in the city's ultra-Orthodox areas. In the pamphlets, women are ordered to keep their hair tied and their shirts buttoned up to the very end and to wear long sleeves.

The "chastity squad" pamphlets were distributed in mailboxes in the city's religious and secular neighborhoods. They start off with some rhetorical questions: "You don't want to hurt people, right? You're a considerate person, right?"

Next, the booklets elaborate on the demands for a modest appearance: "Your neck must not show from all sides. On the front – from where the rib bones start; the shoulders – from where the neck slope begins; on the back – from the first bone of the scruff." Each instruction is accompanied by a drawing.

Additional instructions state that the shirt must be wide, long and nontransparent; the sleeves must be long enough so as "not to reveal the elbow in any form or movement"; and the skirt must be long, wide and without a slit.

The rabbis explain in the booklet that "entering a haredi neighborhood obligates us (from a moral aspect) to be considerate of the place's nature and not to hurt the residents' feelings, and to be seen in modest clothing only."

23. Not yet, but wait when they get more power!
They will become as ruthless and corrupt as the old Jewish priesthood.

18. When they start lashing women and beating them instead of passing out pamphlets
then it will be the same.

35. They've already done that....
Police have already arrested Binyamin Meirovich, who used to frequent this office; they believe he played a central role in a case in which a formerly Haredi woman was attacked because she was suspected of having improper ties with married men. They also arrested Shmuel Weissfish, on suspicion of harassing and torching shops in the Geula neighborhood. And an indictment was filed against Elhanan Buzaglo, which accuses him of being a "fist for hire" in the service of the modesty patrols and Meirovich and of playing an active role in attacking the formerly ultra-Orthodox woman. Meirovich and Weissfish were recently released under restrictive conditions, but police promise that they will be indicted, and there may be additional indictments as well.

A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized last week in Jerusalem after a “modesty guard” spilled acid on her for wearing pants.

The attack occurred in Beitar Illit, a Jerusalem suburb where tensions between religious and secular residents are on the rise. Paramedic Dror Eini said the girl told them that “the modesty guards have been threatening her for quite some time.”

“If she would have been wearing the same thing in Jerusalem or in Tel Aviv, she would not have stuck out in any way,” he said.

A witness said the attacker stopped the girl and asked her for directions. Then, after confirming her surname, he spilled a bottle of acid on her.

The girl was released from the hospital after the attack

8. You've obviously never been to Benders
Benders is the more modest version of Hooters, where the waitresses wear long skirts and long sleeves, with holes at the elbows. Rumor is, Republican Senators are well-known for stuffing pictures of Lincoln, Hamilton, and even Jackson into the elbow holes. Regular Jackson tippers often get some "elbow action" if you know what I mean.

The endgoal is appeasing to soccer moms and NASCAR dads who know little of the subject matter.

If you see me going off on it...you'll know what it is. It sounds pithy as it is compared to the real problems that we are facing economically and beyond.

19. This is part of a long simmering debate about the Haredi role in Israel
and what kind of control they can have over their enclaves. Its not going to end anytime soon. There has been some violence, unfortunately mostly against women. The secular residents are becoming less and less tolerant of the restrictions and the economic costs of support the Haredi. However, they remain the key swing block in the Israeli parliament.

29. You totally missed the point...
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 08:23 PM by Violet_Crumble
You've made the same all-encompassing comment about another religion more than once when it comes to actions by their religious extremists, yet when it comes to religious extremists who are Jewish, it's a whole different ball game with a long explanation explaining that they're religious extremists and not the norm. Don't you think you should hold the same attitude towards all religions? Because treating Islam differently than other religions and making out that their extremists are the norm in the religion is what's totally uninformed...

and for the record, I for one don't find any of those '(insert name of religion here) in action' comments acceptable, no matter which religion it's applied to...

Though, it's kind of creepy to think that a woman unintentionally elbowing one of these guys in a crowd might lead to him getting his rocks off or something.
