Hebron – Ma’an – With support from the European Union and the World Bank, a Biotechnology Unit for Training and Research has been established at Palestine Polytechnic University in the West Bank city of Hebron.
The unit includes research laboratories in the fields of molecular medical biology and agricultural biotechnology.
The project is intended to transfer the advanced biotechnology techniques to both the agricultural and medical sectors in Palestine and to develop practical applications of these techniques to meet the needs of Palestinian society, contribute to development, and allow Palestinians to take advantage of natural resources.
The research unit is designed to allow a high level of academic instruction in biotechnology and facilitate research in genetics, focusing on applied research. The research unit’s founders also plan to develop local and international partnerships, exchanges, and joint development projects.
Yaqoub Ashhab, the head of the research unit noted that “there is a specific strategy in the mechanism of work of the unit to meet the needs of the Palestinian society, especially in the field of biotechnology that in a way touches aspects of human life.”
