In assuming that a Jewish state would make anti-Semitism disappear, Zionism's founding fathers were dead wrong. The state was supposed to make the Jewish people "normal" and render it acceptable. But anti-Semitism is now more virulent and ubiquitous than ever. This may be due to Arab involvement, largely animated by Israel's existence, in its nurture and propagation.
Even more astonishing – Israel itself has become the world's Jew. For millenia the Jews have been blamed for all evil. Now Israel, a tiny democratic island in a sea of Arab totalitarianism, is blamed not only for all Middle Eastern murderous conflicts – a palpable absurdity – but for everything from spying for the Soviet Union to selling American "Patriots" to China, from organizing Colombian drug terrorism to manipulating the stock market in Japan. As in the Nazi propaganda film The Eternal Jew, Jerusalem is deemed to be the headquarters of the Elders of Zion, the fountainhead of all that is wrong with the world.
The very fact that this little dot on the map, which contains less than one thousandth of the world population, has been a target of 30 percent of the UN's condemnations – this in an era of totalitarian repressions, wholesale massacres, expulsions of vast populations, expanding slavery and unspeakable acts of genocide – is a measure of the anti-Israel venom.
The world media have played a critical role in this development. Most journalists seem to view the Arab-Israeli conflict neither as a confrontation between a democratic society and the forces of totalitarianism and fundamentalism, nor as an Arab drive spearheaded by the Palestinian Arabs to destroy Israel. They see it as a cross between a war of national liberation and a civil rights struggle, between Algerians fighting French colonialists and Alabama blacks resisting white sheriffs.
