Vege spite spreads...

Interesting article for the comments...

VEGEMITE has gone halal in a bid by food giant Kraft to make the national "treasure" available to Muslim Australians.

The label on Australia's most famous spread has changed in recent months to include halal certification in a move some have described as "ridiculous" political correctness.

Muslim leaders have congratulated Kraft for introducing the labels, but Family Council of Victoria secretary Bill Muehlenberg questioned the company's motives.

"This is a private company trying to make money," Mr Muehlenberg said. "I don't think they care a rip about offending the tastebuds of Muslims.

"Why do we have to keep bending over backwards to please minority groups? There are only 300,000 Muslims in Australia out of 22 million people, which is a very small percentage.

"Of course, there's a case for making allowances for different cultures, but aren't we getting a bit carried away with political correctness here? It's ridiculous."

2. Nothing like a bit of good ol' Muslim-bashing to go with the Vegemite on toast!
Yuck. What makes me feel ickier than trying out some of that awful Vegemite iSnack or whatever they've called it now is that such a mundane thing would set the bogans and bigots off in a frenzy of head explosions. If having something on the label for Muslim vegemite eaters is required, then who gives a shit? As if any of those twits carrying on about how Australia is a *Christian country* have the intelligence to read any labels anyway...

3. OK I gotta ask
what the hell is vegemite anyway?

I've seen it grocery stores around me mostly in the East Indian section
as far as the labeling who cares a number of labels in my area read "Halal equivalent of Kosher" I suppose that would make some heads explode

4. You know Marmite? Well, it's like that but much yummier...
It's a yeast extract that people like me have grown up with on our sandwiches and toast. I'm so used to having the stuff on my toast for breakfast that I had withdrawals when I was in Europe and found a really bad Australian pub in Vienna and paid far too many euros for a couple of pieces of toast thinly spread (at least in my opinion) with Vegemite.

All you need to know is that it's very yummy and if anyone tells you it's not, they're lying!

7. I didn't like Marmite much when I tried it...
It was like Vegemite without the bite.....

Kimchi? Now that's just wrong. I don't like anything that's pickled...

11. To each their own.
I love Kimchi. Hadn't heard of Marmite before this, and the only thing I knew about Vegemite was that it was mentioned in a song by Men at Work.

13. i make my own kimchi... have you tried cucumber kimchi
it's REALLY good. it's nice to make because it sets a lot quicker than conventional (napa cabbage) kimchi. it's ready in a couple of days.

i make my own sour pickles, too. i can't find good sour pickles in seattle

18. Marmite? Vegemite? WTF is it exactly.
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 10:14 PM by Dick Dastardly
I have never heard of marmite but I have heard of vegimite but dont know what it is. I heard of Vegimite from Men at Work Down Under.
I am assuming its some kind of spread, is it like margerine?

When I was a little kid in the mid 70s I lived in W Germany and Switzerland and there was a spread called Nutella that I really liked. It was popular all over Europe. When I got back to the States it was not available(at least not in the regular supermarkets).Every so often friends of my parents visited from Europe and would always bring some jars when they came because they knew I liked it so much. My parents would bring back some when they went to Europe too. I kind of forgot about it from High school onward. Girls, brewski and weed were the only thing on my mind in High school and the only thing I wanted from Europe was some good hashish. Years later I saw it in the regular supermarkets here and have been enjoying it again ever since. Its now available pretty much anywhere in the US.

btw
Chef Boyardee, the greatest chef ever in the world, created some American classics like his mini raviolis or spaghetti-Os w/franks. You have not lived until you have tried his classics. If its available I suggest you try some.

Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six-foot-four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,

"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

6. Its a savoury yeast spread
it tastes a bit like soy sauce but is stiff like peanut butter. Ideally it is thinly spread on toast.

8. It's interesting that the exploding heads were nowhere to be seen when it was certified Kosher...
I just can't get swept up in the belief in that comments section that labelling a jar of Vegemite will lead to the destruction of life as we know it. When it comes to dietary requirements of Muslims and Jews, I can't see what the problem is in labelling products so they can be used by those groups...

10. Maybe not in Australia,
but in the US there is every so often a complaint about the "Kosher Tax" having to do with the cost of getting food certified and labeled. It also might have to do with the (false) perception that the West is at war with Islam. It's nonsense, but zenophobia and bigotry don't exactly feed on intelligence.
