Irish councilmen snub Israeli ambassador
Irish newspaper reports town councilmen voted to rip out page of town's visitor's book signed by Israel's Ambassador Zion Evrony

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3855939,00.html

<snip>

"Israel's Ambassador to Ireland Zion Evrony is at the heart of a diplomatic spat after local councilmen voted to rip out the page of a town's visitors' book, which he had signed during a visit last month, the Independent reported Sunday.

According to the paper, town councilmen in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, voted on Friday to remove the page, which was signed by Evrony during a visit to the town's civic offices.

The incident comes at a time of growing tensions between Ireland and Israel following the assassination of a Hamas official in Dubai which prompted allegations that Mossad agents used fake Irish passports.

The Independent reported that Evrony was in the region on a tour of Ireland, aimed at countering misconceptions about Israel."

2. The first resident Jews in Ireland
arrived in 1225.
Robert Briscoe, a Jew, was elected Mayor of Dublin in 1956 and again in 1961. His son Ben was also elected Mayor of Dublin, serving from 1988 to 1989.

4. Yes. Ireland has always had a Jewish community.

Chaim Herzog, who was President of Israel in the 1980s, came from Ireland originally.

In this connection, does anyone else know this Irish folk song, as sung by the Clancy Brothers:

The policeman walked out, oh, so proud on his beat
When a vision came to him of stripes on his sleeve;
"Promotion," he whispered, "I'll try for today,
So its come with me Mister Ri-tooral-i-ay."

"Come tell me your name," says the limb of the law
To the little fat man selling wares on the straw.
"What's that, sir? Me name, sir? Why it's there on display
And it's Moses Ri-tooral-i-ooral-i-ay."

Now, the trial it came on and it lasted a week.
One judge said 'twas German; another, 'twas Greek-
"Prove you're lrish," said the policeman "and beyond it say nay;
And we'll sit on it, Moses Ri-tooral-i-ay."

Now the prisoner stepped up there as stiff as a crutch.
"Are you lrish or English or German or Dutch?"
"I'm a Jew, sir; I'm a Jew, sir," that came over to stay.
And my name it is Moses Ri-tooral-i-ay."

"We're two of a kind." said the judge to the Jew;
"You're a cousin of Briscoe and I am one too.
This numbskull has blundered and for it will pay."
"Wisha that's right," says Moses Ri-tooral-i-ay.

There's a garbage collector who works down our strset;
He once was a policeman, the pride of his beat.
And he moans all the night and he groans all the day,
Singing," Moses Ri-tootal-i-ooral-i-ay. "

5. Ireland Palestinian Solidarity Campaign
"The IPSC was set up in late 2001 by a group of established Irish human rights and community activists, academics and journalists who were deeply concerned with the current situation in the Occupied Territories. In partnership with Palestinians now living in Ireland the IPSC was formed to provide a voice for Palestine in Ireland.

We are an independent, non-party political organisation, run by volunteers all committed to a just and sustainable peace in the Middle East.

The IPSC is a member-based organisation, funded by our members annual fees, standing orders and donations. We are run by our highly active and commmited volunteer members."

If you didn't know about this organization, based in several Irish cities, take a look at its work, since 2001:

6. PS: The roots of this organization stem from Ireland's long fight for freedom from England.

Got a freedom issue, contact them immediately. The Palestinians already have.

8. Um, you might want to clarify that slightly?
Are you referring to training given to Palestinian militant groups by the IRA, or to something else?

9. Irish foreign minister condemns snubbing of ambassador
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3856384,00.html

“I fully understand and share the deep concerns which many people in Ireland feel in regard to Israel’s policies on a number of issues, including the settlement of East Jerusalem and the West Bank and its blockade of Gaza, as well as the allegations of the use of forged Irish passports by Israeli agents. I made our concerns on these matters known last week when I met the Israeli Foreign Minister and visited Gaza," Martin said on Monday in a statement issued in response to a Ynet report on the Carrickmacross Town Council's decision.

"However, it is a basic principle of relations between States that we treat each other’s diplomatic representatives with civility and respect, regardless of any policy differences. To do otherwise would seriously undermine the ability of states to conduct international relations," he said.
