Editor's Notes: From bad to worse
By DAVID HOROVITZ

Why can’t the Obama administration simply ask Mahmoud Abbas to stand up and deliver, as Netanyahu did at Bar-Ilan last year, a ‘two states’ speech?
=========================================
Most Israeli media carries a broads spectrum of opinion columns. The posted comments as always are interesting. This is not the commentator David Horowitz from the US.

1. Dammit - I wish DU would take TheCrazyForum off the list of what appears on the Latest Topics page.

9. Not sure why my post got deleted. Someone seems to be very sensitive...
I'm not sure why anyone would have the idea that forums like this one, the gungeon and 9/11 that get deliberately buried by the admin make DU any sort of jewel. While they appeal to RW types who visit DU (was it my description of how an unlimited lifespan is available for conservatives while upstairs they'd get outed quick that got this post zapped?) because there's no need to fake any RW views, they really are something that gets swept under the carpet.

Hope that was sufficiently non-zapworthy...

4. Netanyahu's so-called two-state speech completely ruled out any possibility
of any removal of any settlers - ever - as well as rejecting any compromise on Jerusalem -

Netanyahu has also publicly promised the settler movement that any limited freeze on settlements in the West Bank is temporary and one time only and will never again be repeated.

Thus Netanyahu has already publicly ruled out any possibility whatsoever of any viable two-state solution - Ever.

6. Why do people make the assumption Nutty is interested in peace-making?
This line from the article stood out about Israel's intentions and what its own ideas of its sovereignty should be:

'Obama, in the 17 minutes I spent with him when he visited as a presidential candidate two years ago, while clearly regarding himself as a friend of Israel, evinced no particular empathy for an Israel expanded for religious, historic or security reasons.'

I for one would hope Obama and anyone who labels themselves progressive would have zero empathy when it comes to desires from the Israeli government to expand Israel. It doesn't matter what the excuses are, there should be the same zero tolerance as there is for those who desire a Palestinian state that takes in more than the West Bank and Gaza. Unfortunately there are DUers in this forum, as well as those who blindly support any Israeli govt, no matter whether it's extremist RWers running it, who look sympathetically on those who have a desire to expand Israel, even if they themselves claim not to support such a thing...

8. Abbas could never make such a speech - it would be suicidal for him
Let Abbas speak in Arabic, to his own people – with his leadership colleagues on hand to publicly support and applaud him – and let him tell them that the Jews, too, have historic rights to Palestine. Let him make plain that viable compromise is vital to the future well-being of both peoples. Let him recall that the international community, in partitioning British mandatory Palestine, provided for a Jewish and an Arab entity side by side – that, in other words, the provision for revived Jewish sovereignty was integral to the right the Palestinians seek to realize for their own historically unprecedented independence. And let him declare, therefore, that he recognizes that the demand for a “right of return” for millions of Palestinians to what is now Israel is a dream that must be abandoned, for the Jewish nation has the right to that small sliver of sovereign land of its own.

No way we'll see this in our lifetimes.
