US: Settlements Must End To Retain Jewish State

The end to all settlement activity is the only way to secure the future of Israel as a Jewish State US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs William Burns has warned, as part of a two-pronged American attempt to ensure that both sides make concessions on the road to peace.

"The demographic picture is very stark," Burns said in a closed speech Wednesday to the George Marshall Foundation the text of which was released by the State Department on Thursday. "Within the next decade or so, Jews will be a minority in the area encompassing Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.

In a telephone conversation with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei, on Thursday Secretary of State Colin Powell meanwhile made it clear that the US is looking for the newly sworn in Palestinian government to take "immediate steps against terrorist organizations."

Powell telephoned Qurei to congratulate him on the formation of his new government, but also to express his dismay at the failure to wrest control of the security forces from the tight grip of PA Chairman Yasser Arafat. Powell also warned Qurei that his cabinet will be judged on its actions, not its words, according to The New York Times.
