Lieberman: This generation will not see Middle East peace
Lieberman: This generation will not see Middle East peace

Palestinian Authority is incapable of peace – but will not return to violence, says FM, calling for interim deal as substitute for final status agreement.

By Jonathan Lis

A peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians will not be achieved in the foreseeable future, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Sunday.

Speaking at a conference of his ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu party, Lieberman said a complete peace agreement that included an end of the conflict and Palestinian recognition of Israel as a Jewish state was unattainable, even with significant concessions and territorial compromise.

Peace was impossible, "not next year and not for the next generation", Lieberman said.

24. Whichever generation is there when the Palestinians are finally
driven out of their homes for good and Israel is ethnically cleansed will see peace.

2. Lieberman hasn't figured out that nobody cares what he thinks?
He's made himself a very poor foreign minister, and I'm still waiting for the coalition to collapse again, so the Labor/left side can finally oust right-wing fucknuts and make themselves very irrelevant (losing seats in the Knesset) and make a majority coalition with all-left, instead of giving the righies wiggle room - there, we can achieve peace in their LIFETIME.

16. The Israeli left have to find a way to get votes again.
Edited on Thu Sep-09-10 03:17 AM by Ken Burch
At this point, the Israeli political spectrum is divided between the "Kill 'em all-let God sort 'em out" faction(the current governing coalition)and the "Kill MOST of 'em-let God sort 'em out" primary opposition(Kadima).

Parties with humane values aren't doing well in Israeli politics these days, and aren't likely to gain support for years to come. This is sad, and there's no real justification for it-it's not as if the hardliners have made Israel any more secure at all.

As a first step, can somebody PLEASE talk the Israeli Labor Party into either dissolving or getting the hell OUT of the governing coalition? They aren't doing themselves or anyone else any good by supporting Bibi and Lieberman. I'm amazed that the pitiful remnant of Labor HASN'T deposed Ehud Barak as leader by now. Why on Earth would the still want him as leader, when it's his fault that they only have twelve seats?

17. Don't worry Ken,
Either Lieberman can stand alone as a joke in their own right, albeit a bad joke.

7. Which generation? His? People in their 20s? It does make a difference.
The generation in grade school now may live to see the collapse of the American empire by the time they are senior citizens.

11. Interesting how, once there is a serious effort toward peace..
people like Lieberman and Ahmanutjob rush out to say it's never going to happen! Obviously neither of them can stand the idea of Middle East peace.

15. Not to encourage leiberman etc but
Mideast Peace encompasses lots more than I/P peace and quite a few of the parties in the ME have not ever expressed any desire for peace talks. IOW I/P peace will not lead to ME peace.

23. I'm afraid I think they're right on this one.
I don't think there's much chance of the current negotiations going anywhere, givent the makeup of the current Israeli government, and I'm mildly surprised that you do, to be honest.

Also, conflating prediction with desire is something to avoid, I think.

has anything to say about it and things do not look hopeful for the next either

Poll: Half of Israeli teens don't want Arab students in their class
Study polling 500 teens aged 15 to 18 finds that most don't think Arabs enjoy equal rights in Israel, and most of those don't think Arabs deserve equal rights.
