Livni: Netanyahu's refusal to extend settlement freeze is hurting Israel

Israel must yield to the U.S. proposal to extend its recently expired settlement building freeze by two months, opposition leader Tzipi Livni said Friday, blaming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rightist government for weakening Israel security and world standing.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians had been deadlocked over Israel's refusal to extend its moratorium on settlement construction, with the U.S. President Barack Obama reportedly asking Israel to extend the freeze by two months for peace talks to continue.

Referring to the reported American offer, Livni, spkeaing befor the Israeli Farmers Association on Friday, asked: "Why not? Because we need to keep some people in the coalition that will stay there anyway?"

"Is that comparable to the strategic ties with the United States? Israel must stop defining itself by the threats surrounding it," the opposition leader said, adding Israel "needs to promote a vision. We don't need to be united because we're threatened. That's not a common denominator."

Agree on all counts. I'd be a Meretz voter if I were Israeli; but Livni would be much better than Netanyahu.
