Israel extends jail term for Palestinian activist

An Israeli military court on Tuesday extended the jail term of a Palestinian activist who has already served over a year in prison for organizing protests against Israel's security barrier.

The Ofer military court handed down a 16-month sentence against Abdullah Abu Rahma, who has already spent 13 months and one day behind bars for organizing and participating in West Bank protests against the controversial barrier.

Abu Rahma's lawyer Gaby Laskey told AFP she expected her client would serve two of the extra three months in prison, and the last month on administrative release, meaning he risks going back to jail if he participates in or organizes any demonstrations.

He was arrested in December 2009, and convicted eight months later of inciting and organizing illegal demonstrations, but acquitted on charges of stone-throwing and weapons possession for exhibiting spent tear-gas canisters fired by Israeli troops.

His conviction prompted human rights groups and officials including European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to express concern.

1. I wish all the do-gooders would pay this much...

attention to that IDF trooper who was captured when he was 18 or 19 and has yet, after two years incarceration, to see his parents, receive mail, see an attorney, see a rep from the UN or any other world body.

No one seems to know where he is.

Israeli custody? the do-gooders due pay attention to Gilad Shalit's imprisonment however, in fact there is to be a 'mothers rally' in the coming days to help free him and he has been held since June of 2006

and are you seriously denying that Israel is holding Palestinians? really? and they are being held in prisons through out Israel and the OPT

5. Shalit is NOT more important than everyone in all of Palestine

If it weren't for the Occupation and the Siege of Gaza, Shalit would never have been captured at all. What's happened to him is simply what happens to soldiers in a war.

I mean, fine, they should release the guy, but it's sickening to hear this argument that Shalit somehow trumps everything else.
