Gaza group threatens to execute abducted Italian
A You Tube clip the group posted on Thursday said the man they were holding, Vittorio Arrigoni, would be killed on Friday at 5 p.m. local time (10 a.m. EST) unless Hamas releases Hesham al-Sa'eedni, whom it detained last month.

"If our demands are not met within 30 hours starting from 11 a.m. of 14.4.2011 the captive will be executed when the period is over," a text on the video clip said.

Arrigoni, an Italian pacifist and blogger, has lived in the Gaza Strip for some time. He was shown blindfolded in the 3-minute clip with blood around his right eye and a hand can be seen pulling his head up by his hair to face the camera.

1. I thought the first sentence of the article was kind of important
-so I added it too for the sake of clarity. I'm sure it was simply an oversight.

GAZA — A Jihadist group in the Gaza Strip aligned with al Qaeda threatened on Thursday to execute an abducted Italian it is holding within hours, unless Hamas Islamists release the group's leader

4. I wonderd seeing that you thought it was important
would you think a situation such as this warrants international intervention of some sort in Gaza or would you trust Hamas to keep control of this situation?

that the Italian government would do everything in it's power to bring him safely home.

6. Non Muslims are crazy to go into these areas. There are so may other places in the
world that need selfless and caring volunteers.

9. this s is the first abduction of a foreign national since 2007 in the Gaza
Most volunteers have reported being treated quite royally.

Clearly this group that murdered Mr. Arrigoni will earn only the scorn of the entire Gaza population - even among the most militant Hamas supporters. I remember a time when Al Qaida had real support in the Gulf states. When they started kidnapping and murdering - their support immediately came to an end. How much more so than for the people of Gaza whose survival requires people like Mr. Arrigoni,

Arrigoni was the first foreign national to be abducted in the Gaza Strip since BBC journalist Alan Johnston, who was held for 114 days by an al Qaeda-inspired clan group named the Army of Islam. He was released in 2007.

15. Wrong on two points
1. Most volunteers are not "treated quite royally" - in fact, incidents of sexual harassment (and worse) are de rigueur for female volunteers.

2. Preposterous to suggest that this group will earn "the scorn of the entire Gaza population" - to make any claims to know how an entire population will respond to something is either just silly.

Exclusive: New Gaza Salafist faction numbers 11,000

Gaza - Ma'an Exclusive - "We, the Salafists, count more than 11,000 members who carry with them jihadist teachings from both Ayman At-Thawahri and Osama Bin Laden," said Abu Al-Hareth, leader of the Jund Ansar Allah, during an interview in his poorly lit Gaza home.

16. certainly volunteers I have known who have gone into such area
Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 05:53 PM by Douglas Carpenter
have reported being treated most kindly, regardless what Arutz Sheva and other right-wing hate sites say. Activist I have talked to report nothing but hospitality and kindness. Our friend Progressive Muslim did live in the Gaza and I'm sure she does not share your view. Certainly the number of 11,000 Salafist is very disturbing even if it is out of 1.4 million people in the Gaza - but even the Salafist have denounced this murder and as you know even Hamas has no time for the Salafist who they consider way too extreme. I don't think there is any doubt that the vast overwhelming majority has any time for these sorts. I think you have a cartoon-caricature picture in your mind what the people in these places are like. But the Gaza is a pressure cooker of a place where all kinds of craziness has been going on for some time. Even Sara Roy who has lived in the Gaza has commented back in the 90's on the lack of law and order, But there again Sara Roy, a Jewish-American Harvard academic reported how kindly most people were in spite of all the chaos.

17. Palestinian factions denounce murder of Italian activist

Islamic Jihad also denounced the "grotesque crime." The movement said the perpetrators served the Israeli occupation which was inciting against the solidarity movement with the Palestinian cause.

The Palestinian People's Party said Arrigoni's murder was "a moral and national crime," and called for the perpetrators to be severely punished.

The Popular Resistance Committees condemned the murder as "a cowardly act."

Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative Mustafa Barghouthi expressed his deep sorrow at the "shocking criminal act" which he said only served the interests of the enemies of the Palestinian people.

Salafi leader: Islam prohibits murder

Salafi leader Iyad Ash-Shami said Friday that Salafi groups were not involved in the murder of an Italian activist in the Gaza Strip.

The killing of Vittorio Arrigoni "had nothing to do with Islam," he said, adding that Salafi groups and scholars all agreed that the killing of any man was prohibited.

<snip>

The kidnappers identified themselves in the video as belonging to a previously unknown group called The Brigade of the Gallant Companion of the Prophet Mohammed bin Muslima.

oh and your claim that "1. Most volunteers are not "treated quite royally" - in fact, incidents of sexual harassment (and worse) are de rigueur for female volunteers."

BTW de rigueur means prescribed or required by fashion, etiquette, or custom, so that's your claim , interesting indeed

I noticed you did not provide a link for your claim so I did it for you there was this and a rather lurid installment of the MESS report from Haaretz but this article is based on the same claims

Two activists have exposed a disturbing phenomenon that they say is an open secret within the “peace camp”: female “peace” activists are routinely harassed and raped by the Arabs of Judea and Samaria with whom they have come to identify. They say the phenomenon has gotten worse lately and that many foreign women end up as wives of local Arabs against their will, but cannot escape their new homes.

Roni Aloni Sedovnik, a feminist activist, penned an article in News1 – an independent website run by respected investigative reporter Yoav Yitzchak – under the heading “The Left's Betrayal of Female Peace Activists Who were Sexually Assaulted.”

“A nauseous atrocity has been going on for a long time behind the scenes at the leftists' demonstration at Bil'in, Naalin and Sheikh Jarrah ,” she writes. “A dark secret that threatens to smash the basic ideological values upon which the demand to end the occupation of the Territories rests.”

It turns out, she explains, that when female peace activists from Israel and abroad come out to Judea and Samaria and demonstrate against the Israeli “occupation,” they are assaulted sexually by the Arab men whom they have come to help. These are not isolated incidents, Aloni-Sedovnik stresses. Rather, this is an “ongoing and widespread” phenomenon that includes verbal and physical abuse. She accuses the 'peace' camp of purposely covering up the trend so as not to offend “the Palestinians and their heritage, which sees women as sexual objects.”

11. Hamas has suffered credibility loss with the toughs in exchange for "respectability"
Hamas has a vested interest in relative peace and stability; the salafists tend to sow chaos wherever their footprints tread.

8. They did it. Body of kidnapped Italian peace activist Vittorio Arrigoni found in Gaza
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/apr/15/gaza-threaten-execute-vittorio-arrigoni">Body of kidnapped Italian peace activist Vittorio Arrigoni found in Gaza
An Italian pro-Palestinian activist has reportedly been kidnapped and killed by Islamic militants in Gaza.

The body of Vittorio Arrigoni was found in an abandoned house in the Gaza Strip on Friday following his abduction by militants, a Hamas official said.

Two men were arrested and others were being sought in the killing, the official added.

A Jihadist Salafi group in the Gaza Strip aligned with al-Qaida had threatened to execute Arrigoni by 5pm local time on Thursday unless their leader, whom Hamas arrested last month, was freed.

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Dozens of young Palestinians and peace activists participated Friday in a symbolic funeral for murdered Italian peace activist Vittorio Arrigoni.

The funeral started from at Jundi square to a wake where mourners gathered to pay their last respects. Participants held Palestinian and Italian flags in addition to Arrigoni’s photos.

They condemned the crime against him and chanted slogans like “death to terrorism” and “by soul and blood we sacrifice ourselves for you, Victor”.

"What has happened today is a black day in Palestinian history. The horrific murder of our friend Vittorio is totally condemned," said Khaleel Shaheen of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.

"We ask the local authorities to bring the criminals to justice as soon as possible. He is in our minds always. He is a hero of Palestine," and a Shaheen, a friend of Vittorio, said in a statement.

An Italian activist, identified only as Silvia, said internationals would remain in Gaza.

Demonstrations and vigils were also held across the occupied West Bank. Late Friday in Bethlehem, a few dozen mourners held candles in Nativity Square.
