Safed rabbi boasts that anti-Arab edict worked
From Haaretz:
Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu is one of 18 rabbis who signed a petition in October, urging Jews to refrain from renting or selling apartments to non-Jews.

Safed Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu yesterday boasted that his edict calling for people not to rent apartments to non-Jews was working, while a minster praised his efforts to maintain the Jewish nature of Israel.

“The Jewish law is clear,” Eliyahu said at a conference organized by the rightist religious movement Komemiyut. “In Safed the halakhic ruling worked, people don’t sell land or rent or sell apartments to non-Jews.”

He's coming for you too, Reform Jews.

1. This is one of the reasons that I gave up
on Judaism, on Zionism, on organized religion period.

This is the same mindset that cops have; that 'us' and 'them' thing, the seige mentality. Israel is not in danger; they haven't been in danger, ever. They've been better trained, better armed, and more vicious from the start. They've been better funded from the start, too.

Now, the religious right are supporting each other's neuroses, both here and there!

How the hell does the world get along with these little enclaves of 'pure' genes or ideologies? This isn't smart, and it's not going to make it easy for the world to survive.

2. I understand your anger and despair.
But the problem isn't organized religion OR Judaism. The problem is nationalism...or at least the point at which nationalism and religion intersect. As it goes in Jerusalem, so it goes here.

A wee bit selective in our reporting, are we?

This just goes to show that you can find quotes from nutty individuals to make any religion seem violent and cruel.

And if you are sufficiently prejudiced, you will do just that.
