French peace plan would require Palestinian recognition of Jewish state
Peace initiative proposed by French FM Alain Juppe incorporates the position that the goal of negotiations is 'two states for two peoples,' not just 'a two-state solution.'

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe offered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a proposal on Thursday aimed at breaking the Israeli-Palestinian deadlock before the expected showdown at the UN General Assembly in September.

In a first for the wider international community, the French initiative incorporates the position that the goal of negotiations is "two states for two peoples," not just "a two-state solution."

The French proposal would revive the talks based on the following principles.

The border issue would be discussed based on the 1967 borders with agreed land swaps, in keeping with U.S. President Barack Obama's speech.

snip* Contrary to the international community's former position, the proposal does not stipulate that Jerusalem would be the capital of both states, but only that the Jerusalem issue would be solved via negotiations.

1. It will be interesting to see the replies of the two sides.

Given what the French plan seems to be, if I were Abbas I would come out in favor of it before the Israelis reply. Then Netanyahu either has to support the idea as well or else look like he's the stumbling block.

2. Good. Netanyahu should grab it as he has zero to lose...

This makes up for the concession of '67 borders that the PA had been asking for, for years. In fact, Netanyahu can use this opportunity to bring KADIMA into the coalition, for resuming peace talks.

Shouldn't be a problem for Palestinians who want a genuinely peaceful, long lasting 2 state solution. Good luck getting a Hamas/Fatah unity coalition to agree to recognition of a Jewish state to start negotiations.

Israel needs to maintain total control of the airspace and borders. Anything else is a non-starter.

6. In which case Israel commits suicide
Edited on Fri Jun-03-11 01:09 PM by Recursion
If Israel maintains control of any sort over the West Bank, the Palestinians will simply demand suffrage in Israel, and the South Africa playbook begins. It's actually the cheapest way for them to get the right of return.

You can either be a Jewish state or maintain control of the territories. It's pretty simple.

7. They can have the Gaza, but
Israel needs the WB as a buffer in case Jordan becomes a Quaeda terror state like Yemen is becoming. Besides, every time Israel gives an inch for peace, the PA gives the green light to terror.

Brilliant parody.

(But, since I can't resist: you don't settle civilians in buffer zones. If there had been an occupation without settlements, the situation would be very, very different.)
