Jordan's Hassan: Sharon is pragmatic, but cannot find a partner for peace
Prince Hassan bin Talal, uncle of Jordan's Kind Abdullah and a former heir to the throne of the Hashemite kingdom, has told an Italian newspaper that he sees Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as a pragmatic man, who wants security for his people, but is unable to find a partner on the Palestinian side with whom to conduct negotiations.

In comments published Monday by La Stampa, Prince Hassan said that “Arafat is at a transitory stage, but, unfortunately, we can see the growing influence of Hamas and Hezbollah among the Palestinians."

Hassan, the younger brother of Jordan’s deceased monarch King Hussein, also said that “the Palestinians continue to talk about Palestinian unity. The Palestinian question has never been resolved. From my perspective, Jordan should include all the Palestinians, and Israel, Palestine and Jordan should enjoy the same sort of interdependence as there is in the Benelux countries.”

6. King Hussein's brother
Following in the footsteps of the King to make peace. How much influence this will have with Arafat, and the PA remains to be seen. The pressures of the economic situation in the PA territories could have this as an alternative. I believe the offer has been made before. Arafat isn't interested. We may have to wait till Arafat is gone and the PA becomes a passing phase.

4. As though I give a damn
about what he thinks...

There are other Arab intelectuals and people I respect much more then some royal folks that don't know what it is living in conditions as Palestinians live in.

8. Concern
doesn't seem to be the answer, however. The Palestinians could improve their lives, and this could be an offer of help. He envisions a future of three states co-existing. Don't think it's something to stick one's nose up about.

11. The late King Hussein
couldn't have thought much of his brother, who was crown prince. That's why, in the end, he chose his son, Abdullah, to be the next king.

However, if Hassan can contribute to peace in the Middle East, that would be good.
