Settlers rally in Tel Aviv
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 04:50 PM by DuctapeFatwa
An estimated 100,000 people attended a pro-settler rally in Tel Aviv. Sunday night’s demonstration at Rabin Square was organized by groups opposed to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s policy of settlement withdrawal as part of a disengagement plan from the Palestinians. Some 15 Knesset members from Sharon’s Likud Party attended the rally...

Four members of the Israeli cabinet joined up to 100,000 demonstrators at a rally on Sunday local time in protest at plans to evacuate Jewish settlements as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that some would have to be evacuated with or without a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

Minister without portfolio Uzi Landau, a member of Mr Sharon's own Likud party, was among those who attended the rally organised by the Council for Settlements in Judea and Samaria , the principal settlers' organisation.

"We have tried to mobilise the maximum number of Likud members to show Sharon that he will not be able to do as he pleases," one of the rally organisers, Shaul Goldenstein, told AFP.

Mass protest at settlement moves

Tens of thousands of Israelis have demonstrated against plans which could lead to the dismantling of some Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

(check out Uzi Landau's statements)

" If Jewish communities can be relocated, then Arab communities can be relocated as well. "

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in central Tel Aviv, holding aloft banners and shouting slogans.

One banner read: "Uprooting settlements tears the nation apart." Another said: "God's roadmap - the Bible, gave us this land."

The crowd listened to speeches from right-wing political leaders, including Mr Sharon's own ministers.

4. How silly to say
"If Jewish communities can be relocated, then Arab communities can be relocated as well." This statement is not correct in this case, because the settlers (the Jewish communities) are not on Israeli land, so they should be relocated back to Israel proper, while the (Palestinian) Arabs are on their own land.

3. 120,000 attend right-wing rally at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv
Edited on Sun Jan-11-04 10:16 PM by Darranar
According to police estimates, over 120,000 people gathered Sunday night at Rabin Squre in Tel Aviv for a mass demonstration organized by right-wing movements to protest the planned evacuation of illegal settlement outposts and unilateral steps to reduce Israel's presence in the territories, which were recently announced by the prime minister.

Earlier, the Yesha Council - the Council of Jewish Settlements of Judea, Samaria and the Gaza District - said that it was expecting some 150,000 people to attend. Anything less than this number would be considered a failure, senior Yesha officials said before the event got underway.

...
PM: Gov't, not protestors, makes decisions
In response to the demonstration, Prime Minister Sharon said, "Things are decided not by demonstrators but by the government, my government."

Speaking from Jerusalem, Sharon also said that as members of the government, right-wing ministers attending the rally were still obliged to support the road map peace plan.
