Israel Building Wall in Jerusalem Suburb
By RAVI NESSMAN, AP Writer | The Guardian

ABU DIS, West Bank (AP) - Israeli construction crews hoisted 26-foot-high concrete slabs into the middle of a main road in this Palestinian suburb of Jerusalem on Monday, cutting off thousands of Palestinians from the city they consider their home.

The impenetrable wall is part of a series of barriers Israel is building around much of the West Bank with the stated aim of keeping out Palestinian militants. Palestinians see it as an effort to take land they claim for a future state. Along its path, the barrier has cut Palestinians off from their fields and schools, their hospitals and businesses.

The construction in Abu Dis signaled that Israel's encirclement of Jerusalem is becoming more permanent.

Abu Hliel worries that his four children will not be able to cross to get to school and he won't be able to reach his job as a floor polisher.

``They are putting us into prisons,'' he said.

1. The next Berlin Wall?
That's such a juvenile way to solve things - it's like dividing a room with your sibling by putting tape down the center. And all the people who can't get home or to work or school... that's really all that stupid fence/wall is accomplishing.

4. May I comment
The Berlin wall was intended to prevent East Germans to flee their repressive country to seek freedom in Wet Germany.

The Peace Fence is intended to prevent terrorists from infiltrating into Israel to cause death and terror.

I'm reminded of the story of the guest speaker at graduation. He hadn't prepared his speech and was still searching for a motivating topic. Upon arriving at the graduation he noticed the sign on the door which said "push to open" and thought to himself, what a great idea for his speech. Students must "push" to strive ahead.

When it was his turn to speak he still hadn't formulated the exact words but knew his theme was written on the sign on the door.

So he began, "graduating seniors, the key to success as you leave these hallowed halls can be seen on the sign posted on the door. Your future success will forever be determined by those words"

Obediently the students turned around to read those words and laughed their asses off.

It said of course, nah.... you fill in the blank word.

13. OK,
the Palestinians have been offered peace time and time again. They have been offered their own state. They have refused to take it because they did not get EVERYTHING they wanted. Negotiation means that both sides get something and both give something up.

So, in my opinion, it is now time for the Palestinians to make an offer. What will they give up, besides violence, to obtain peace. As a beginning, Jerusalem, all of it. Also, they will pressure Syria to get out of Lebanon, and support the annexation of the Golan Heights. these are necessary for Israel's security. also, they will pay reparations to the Israeli citizens, and their families, who have been harmed by their murder campaigns.

Now do you understand?

2. From the last paragraph
"At a time when we're trying to make peace, the Israeli government continues with the wall, settlement activity, stifling ... closures, in a line of fait accomplis that destroy the essence of peace in the region,'' Palestinian Cabinet minister Saeb Erekat said."

I may have missed it and I am sorry your article ended here. Please tell me exactly what steps the PA government have initiated to make "peace"?

And may I ask what "essence of peace" is being destroyed?

6. The high sections of concrete wall ....
are not only to prevent infiltration of terrorists into Israel, but also to block sniper fire into Israeli areas and main highways from high vantage points in Palestinian areas. Most of the "series of barriers", in fact over 95% of it is chain link fence and razor wire with a system of electronic intrusion detectors.
