Incoming A-G: Decision on PM to be made without delay

Incoming attorney general Menachem (Meni) Mazuz said Sunday, after the cabinet approved his appointment, that all decisions pertaining to the affairs Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is allegedly involved, will be made "without any unnecessary delay, but with all required caution." Mazuz said he could not make any further statements on the matter before he officially begins his duties as attorney general.
At the first meeting he held with senior Justice Ministry officials, Mazuz said he would not attend cabinet meetings on a regular basis, as has been the practice, and will only attend meetings in which his presence is necessary.
Mazuz said this was a symbolic step intended to demonstrate a clear and formal separation between the attorney general and the political system, and in order to minimize the friction between the attorney general's office and the government.
Mazuz emphasized that he intends to retain the attorney general's independent status and maintain the public's confidence.
