From Ha'aretz (Jerusalem)
Dated Tuesday January 27

Arbel: an indicted public servant must suspend himself
By Yuval Yoaz, Haaretz Correspondent and Haaretz Service

State Prosecutor Edna Arbel on Monday said that a public servant who is indicted must suspend himself. Arbel's comments come amid hints by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his close associates that Sharon would not suspend himself if indicted, by taking advantage of a clause in the "Basic Law: The Government," which enables a prime mininister to remain in office until a final court verdict is given.

9. Not really
The government offices are in Jerusalem. Even though Ha'ARETZ main offices are in Tel Aviv, the reporter and the report is quite likely from Jerusalem.

11. Or not
Since it is a report on a conference Arbel attended at Herzliya, in Tel Aviv.

2. I had two thoughts about this:
1.) If he doesn't suspend himself, who's going to make him?

2.) This should be an excellent test of whether Israel is as
corrupt as the USA (we know nothing would be done here).

On the face of it, one has to admit at least the the public
debate on the issue is more open in Israel than it would be here,
it would be wall-to-wall bullshit here.

10. There seems to be a clause
...that the Prime Minister is not included in the rule of suspension when indicted. Although it may very well happen that he does suspend himself in such a case, if the climate of the country allowed him to continue, or if there was a national emergency, he might continue in the office. If not, Olmert would probably take over as acting PM.

7. Has to be proved
Was it found to have been bugged? It's not okay, but all the governments seem to have spies.
