Israel: World Court has no right to rule on barrier
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L30476811.htm

<snip>

"Israel on Friday formally challenged the World Court's right to rule on the legality of a huge barrier it is building in the West Bank, a Foreign Ministry official said.

"We believe the court should not and cannot deal with this political issue, which has to be dealt with by direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians," the official said after Israel filed its affidavit.

With its challenge to the jurisdiction of the Hague-based International Court of Justice, Israel met a deadline for all interested parties to submit arguments by Friday."

<snip>

"The tribunal, also known as the World Court, begins deliberations on the project on February 23 in response to a U.N. General Assembly request to rule whether Israel was legally obliged to tear down the barrier."

8. This is nothing so special as that
It is rather basic arrogance of being caught in unsavory acts, trying to charm or bully their way out of the corner being backed into.

5. US: World Court should not rule on Israeli barrier
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N30349616.htm

<snip>

"The United States, which regards the barrier Israel is building in the West Bank as a problem, argued on Friday that the International Court of Justice is not the proper forum to decide its legality.

"This morning at the International Court of Justice we filed a brief on the Israeli fence essentially arguing that this is not the kind of issue that should be decided by the international court," a senior U.S. official said. "(This is a) dispute involving particular parties, political issues (and) needs to be dealt with by negotiation."

6. They decided on this course of action
Edited on Fri Jan-30-04 02:45 PM by tinnypriv

At the "kitchen cabinet" of Jan 18, chaired by Sharon.

The reason is because it is the only way to garner any significant support among the UN's most powerful (read: criminal) states. Even those that "oppose" the current route of the fence do not want to be subjected to international scrutiny for their crimes.

(Note that in any event, that opposition is largely, if not wholly, rhetorical)

Another reason for this tactic is that the Government of Israel's own Justice Minister has decided that the route of the fence is: "Totally indefensible".1

Since it can't be defended, no prosecution must be allowed to judge it, by simple definition.

-----

1. Paraphrased quote from "behind closed doors". Cited by Ben Caspit, Ma'ariv, 16 Jan 2004. The reporting of this in Israel provoked Sharon into a rage against ministerial "babblers", who were giving ammunition to "critics" of the fence (read: gentiles). cf. Menahem Rahat, Ma'ariv, 18 Jan 2004.

On Lapid's "totally indefensible" remark is duly noted.

15. yeah, that's who. But I forgive the Israelis, everyone makes mistakes.
After all look at all the people here who voted for Bush. Do I think they're all scumbag war-criminals like Bush, no, deluded yes, but I leave the blame for war-crimes where it belongs, at the feet of war-criminals.

16. You forgive the Israelis
And I'm sure they care. Sharon has been prominent in Israeli public life for over 30 years. The people know him very well. They knew exactly who they were electing and it wasn't close.

in this outrageous and criminal attempt to deny Israel's right to do whatever it wishes to do to whomever it wishes to do it.

19. or they could just say put a sock in it...
Britain opposes international court review of security fence...

The British government will today infuriate Arab opinion by supporting Israel in a legal challenge to the construction of its controversial wall along the West Bank.

...

...Australia is to oppose the hearing, and Germany is also likely to do so. The US has not yet said whether it will make a submission. The French government is expected to take a more ambiguous position, combining in its submission opposition to the hearing with condemnation of the wall.

20. LOL Washington does a better job of lining it up than old Urban

They're doing a pretty good job of lining their pockets with it too.

Good news for Israel, now they'll be able to build a roof once they get themselves walled in good.

21. indeed...
since they will wall and roof themselves in good, as they so deserve, it's difficult to understand all the sad faces...

(and, as if they were reading someone's mind, the Israel Air Force has changed its name to the Israel Air and Space Force, so they already have the roofers engaged - you know how hard it is to get good homeland repair work done these days?)...

22. Yes I understand that the US will allow Israel to guard some of its

outer space, so pleased are they with the terrific job Israel has done guarding its oil.

If only poor Urban had had an Israel, maybe the first crusade would have turned out differently.

And all faithful little Israel asks is to be allowed to have more kills than the family next door.
