3 Queens Congressmen Defend Israel In Holliswood Roundtable

Three Queens congressmen discussed their staunch support of Israel in the face of the continued Palestinian uprising at a forum at Young Israel Holliswood on Monday in Holliswood.
The three congressmen, Anthony Weiner, Gregory Meeks and Gary Ackerman, representing New York State’s 9th, 6th and 5th Congressional Districts, respectively, agreed broadly on the importance of American support of Israel in its ongoing and destructive conflict with the Palestinians.
The event was co-sponsored by the Queens Jewish Community Council, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The predominantly Jewish audience, who braved a wind chill nearing zero degrees to attend, was nearly uniform in its support of the congressmens’ positions on Israel.
Meeks, an African-American, was the sole non-Jew on the panel. A strong supporter of Israel in Congress, he drew parallels between the plight of Israel today and that of African-Americans during the civil rights movement.

It is gratifying to see congressmen continue to support Israel as she struggles for survival.

1. Ackerman is from my old neighborhood
I met him once, many years ago. I didn't especially agree with him on a number of issues but I must say that the man is a mensch. Actually, when it comes to Israel, Congress (both houses) has a surprising number of decent, conscientious, morally unambiguous voices. Gary Ackerman, Tom Lantos, Anthony Weiner, Greg meeks, Diane Feinstein and many others come to mind.

2. Indeed

Perhaps some should pause to consider why she has such support among both parties.

3. OK - I've considered it - you are talking about
the same two parties that saw no problem with attacking Iraq for no reason. The same two parties that have no problem imprisoning 2 million Americans. The parties that gave giant tax cuts to the rich during war time. The ones that can't get to the bottom of 9/11, the ones that never said a peep when the Supreme Court ordered votes to go uncounted.
Frankly I would be more impressed if someone else besides our two political parties saw some reason to persist with policies that take everyone, Israelis and Palestinians, to the meatgrinder.

I would be more impressed with the judgement of our political parties if they didn't take large sums of money from Israeli supporters - hardly the definition of an impartial observer.
