Mass resignations hit Fatah movement
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/D7DCA6BF-5258-433A-9DCA-9367D9964C32.htm

Some 300 members of Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat's Fatah movement have resigned, protesting against lack of reforms within the organisation.

The signatories, in a message to Arafat and the Fatah Central Committee, condemned the "dramatic situation" within the movement which had failed to respond to calls for reforms.

The nationalist movement was formed in 1959 by Palestinian exiles living at the time in Kuwait, but Palestinians generally consider its birth to be 1 January 1965, the date of the first Fatah attack in Israel.

The-glass-is-half-empty guy. Good news and you don't like it. Be glad (I sound like Herschel) that so many resigned. It's good that change is coming from within.

Scam leaflet on mass Fatah resignations reflects troubled group
Flyer blasts leadership for failing to formulate political platform
The lack of known names leads some to question credibility, analysts believe the problems it outlines are real and pressing
Omar Karmi
Special to The Daily Star

RAMALLAH: On Feb. 7, a leaflet was circulated to both Palestinian and international media stating that more than 300 members of the Fatah movement had resigned in despair over their failed attempts at pushing through reforms within the ruling Palestinian faction.

The leaflet, which was widely publicized, criticized the leadership of Fatah for failing to formulate a single political platform, for its lack of strategy vis-a-vis the intifada and for the prevailing corruption in its midst. The statement was unusual for not being signed by leading Fatah members and thus appeared to be a protest by the rank and file.

Yet the lack of known names also led some to question its credibility. As it turned out, a number of the names on the list revealed themselves to be false, or belonging to deceased people or even Hamas members. On Feb. 9, a Fatah member mentioned on the list, Sarhan Dweikat, took out an advertisement on page 3 of Al-Quds newspaper to dissociate himself from the statement.

Yet despite being a scam, the leaflet resonated both within Fatah and the media. Both Fatah members and analysts agreed that regardless of the origin or aim of the leaflet, the problems it outlined were real and pressing ones.

19. it is strange to find us in agreement, though for very different reasons
Edited on Wed Feb-11-04 12:16 PM by Aidoneus
on the one hand there's the corruption and rigidity that is fairly typical in bureaucratic statist entities, but more interestingly in their more recent tendency of collaborating with Israel to fatten their own pockets--essentially buying the rope that the Zionists use to hang them with yesterday and tomorrow, in order to keep a thin illusion of power today (for example, the segregation wall that Abu Ala's company is apparently helping to build).

Both of these reasons, among others, are why they're losing out to Hamas on all fronts. Marwan Barghouti may be able to stop the decaying process when Arafat is put into the ground, but that's also why the GOI holds him in their sham show trial.

16. Oh well,
they have problems. That is still good news! Having to concentrate on solving their problems gives them less or no time to commit crimes.

18. Yes, I did,
but that was before I read Aidoneus' post. Like I said, it's still good news.

It doesn't change what I think - you are what I said you are.
