Israel to Dismantle Part of West Bank Barrier
Israel to Dismantle Part of West Bank Barrier

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel will tear down part of its controversial West Bank barrier on the eve of World Court hearings challenging its legality, officials said on Saturday.

Workers will start dismantling an eight km (five mile) section of the barrier in the northern West Bank on Sunday after soldiers removed a watch-tower, cables and lighting from the area on Saturday.

Hundreds of Palestinians protested in the West Bank against the barrier on Sunday a day before a "Day of Rage" they have called to mark the start of the International Court of Justice hearings in The Hague (news - web sites).

"The intensive work that we have done has started to produce pressure (on Israel)," said Palestinian Foreign Minister Nabil Shaath. "This work should continue until all the wall is removed."

2. They shouldn't flatter themselves...
"The intensive work that we have done has started to produce pressure (on Israel)," said Palestinian Foreign
Minister Nabil Shaath. "This work should continue until all the wall is removed."

My first thought was that the Israelis must feel that the danger of terrorist infiltration from this particular area is now sufficiently small that a wall is no longer needed. My reading of the article bears that out.

When the terrorism against Israel becomes so rare as to be almost non-existent, the whole wall will be dismantled. OTOH, if the attacks increase in any given area, expect a wall to either remain or to be newly built.
