Danish FM: Withdrawal could leave Gaza a 'terrorist camp'
Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller on Thursday warned that a unilateral Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip could leave the territory as "a terrorist camp."

Also Thursday, Moeller had a confrontation with Israeli security officers, who tried to prevent him from inspecting part of the barrier Israel is building in the West Bank.

After meeting UN envoy Terje Roed-Larsen, Moeller set off for Abu Dis, just outside Jerusalem, where Israel has constructed an 8-meter wall as part of its West Bank barrier project. Palestinians complain that the whole barrier, and especially the Abu Dis wall, disrupts their lives.

This is very scary. :scared: :scared:

2. What part scares you?
The rantings of the Danish twit, or the pullout?

I can certainly see being scared, but I don't see how
a pullout makes things worse. It should free up scarce
military and other resources for the better defense of Israel
proper, and as far as I can tell at present it does not entail
any commitment not to go after terrorists later on wherever they
happen to be.

7. Because
This is exactly what happened in the West Bank area A when it was handed over to the PA and Israel pulled out following the Oslo agreements. It became a hot bed of terrorism, and the Intifada II followed. There were 150 homicide bomb attacks on Israeli civilian areas and more than 900 Israelis were murdered.

Apparently the recent history is already forgotten by many. The possibility of reentering the areas may be there, but that would follow only if there were the kind of onslaught that we've seen over the past three years.

More security assurances will certainly have to be implemented before any withdrawal. Peres is consulting with Mubarak over this very issue.

9. Thank you for responding.
I understand your concerns.
The present situation seems untenable too.
I think I will leave it at that for now.

4. the proper term is "prison camp"
this coming from a gov't that supports the occupation of Iraq, why should it be a surprise that they voice other pro-occupation views?

5. Borders
Setting clear borders between Israeli territory and Palestinian would, I would think, be popular here. Instead, some seem to oppose it.

6. I was mostly interested because he is being more hawkish
than Sharon here, assuming that you believe that Sharon
means what he says.

8. A realistic observation
How do you see this as "hawkish"? After a tour of the area, is he proposing war actions? Hardly.

10. In the sense that he appears to oppose withdrawal here.
"Hawkish" mean aggressive, the context is not necessarily military.

I do not deny that he points out a real problem. The choice of
living next door to Somalia or being in charge of Somalia is not
a pleasant one. It would have been better to avoid turning the place
into Somalia in the first place, but it's too late for that.

Nevertheless, the removal of the settlements does nothing to make
the situation worse, and potentially offers some promise of making
it better.
