"The State Prosecutor’s recommendation to press bribery charges against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is sending shock waves through the political system. The opposition is urging Sharon to quit, while the right wing hopes the indictment will sabotage the Prime Minister’s disengagement plan.
The final decision on whether to indict Sharon, who is suspected of taking bribes from contractor Dudi Appel, will be made by Attorney General Menachem Mazoz. Meanwhile, the political system is rife with speculations of possible changes in the coalition if Sharon is in fact charged.
If Sharon is indicted, Shinnui is expected to have no choice but to leave the coalition, and Sharon is expected to offer its place to the Ultra-Orthodox Shas party, which does not support the disengagement plan. Sharon already hinted that much at the Likud ministers’ meeting last week. He said that if the right wing factions withdraw from the coalition, he would still have Shinnui’s support. Then he said he may have to bring in the ultra-Orthodox factions into the coalition, should Shinnui quit.
Shinnui said it does not intend to quit at present. “If the Attorney General decides to charge the Prime Minister, then we will demand his resignation. If he fails to suspend himself, we will not be in his coalition. But as long as that is not happening, there is no place to demand his suspension”, said Shinnui Minister Yosef Paritzky."
