Jewish settlement removal a 'big lie'
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/18CBDE5A-5813-4B12-AC8C-A1FE5ADCE175.htm

<snip>

"The Israeli army said on Wednesday it removed an uninhabited settlement near the Jewish outpost of Kiryat Arba next to Hebron."

<snip>

"This obviously is a big lie," Abd al-Hadi Hantash, a Hebron municipal official and expert on Jewish settlements in the West Bank, told Aljazeera.net.

"It seems to me that Sharon wants to give an impression that he is dismantling settlements ahead of his planned visit to Washington.

"In fact, we are talking about the removal of a tent and two secondhand mobile homes from a hilltop south of Kiryat Arba. In any case, the settlers will move them back on to the same site tomorrow or after tomorrow after the whole world got the impression that a settlement had been dismantled.

"It is a cynical public relations game, nothing more than that."

2. Not too long ago
they've also "dismantled settlements" that, I read, were only remote outposts with a few trailer homes, that would be back in place afterwards.

4. Of course
The words used by the Israeli press are "cat and mouse game".

The IDF moves in with some video cameras, "dismantles" a sleeping bag and a caravan (paid for by the World Zionist Organisation, funds from the GOI Housing Ministry etc), and then some settlers return five hours later and "rebuild".

Then that all starts over again until the IDF gets bored (usually happens very quickly).

BTW, all but the ultra-right in Israel agree that these "illegal outposts" in the WB should be dismantled. For example, their occupants are even called "hilltop lunatics" in the center-right Israeli press.

Only the U.S. media (and U.S. "pro-Israel" acolytes, some of which you can find in this forum) present taking them down as some kind of "concession". Though given their dismal coverage and hypocrisy, that is hardly a surprise.

3. 14 settlers arrested at Hazon David outpost
http://www.maarivenglish.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=article&articleID=5543

For fourth time in two days, security forces attempt to evacuate outpost near Hebron.

<snip>

"Police have arrested 14 settlers at the Hazon David outpost on charges of illegally gathering and disturbing the peace. Among those arrested were minors, as well as Orit Struck, a member of the Council of Jewish Settlements in Hebron. Settlers have reported that some were injured in clashes with the police.

Confrontations between Judea and Samaria police and settlers continued throughout the day as soldiers tried to evacuate a structure used as a synagogue. The IDF has declared the area a closed military zone, and security forces continue to try and keep settlers away from the area.

This is the fourth time in two days that soldiers have tried to evacuate the outpost, which consisted of a few tents, and the structure used as a synagogue. The first attempt, early Tuesday morning, went off relatively quietly, but since then settlers have been attempting to rebuild the structure again and again. Confrontations between security forces and settlers then continued throughout the day on Tuesday."

7. Just for laughs:
http://www.maarivenglish.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=article&articleID=5910

Hazon David outpost evacuated for seventh time

<snip>

"Security forces evacuated the Hazon David outpost near Hebron for the seventh time on Tuesday. A barbed wire fence was then erected around the entire site to prevent settlers from re-building it.

However, it appears the settlers were not deterred by the officers’ latest method and began building two structures 20 meters from both sides of the encircled outpost.

Security authorities estimated that it would be easier to dismantle the outpost today since the Passover vacation has ended and students were back in school. According to a defense official, “This is the first time a fence has been erected around an outpost. There is no doubt it would make it harder for them."

8. For further laughs
The same paper blandly asserts in news reporting that Sharon's "dismantling" of outposts is for "photogenic reasons".

As usual, the Israeli media is fairly honest.
