Congressman: Egypt preparing for war with Israel
Egypt’s military buildup in preparation for a future war with Israel can and must be halted by cutting off US aid to Cairo, Congressman Tom Lantos said this week.

Lantos, the ranking Democrat in the House International Relations Committee, plans to introduce legislation that would phase out the $1.3 billion Egypt receives annually in US military aid, Middle East Newsline reported Tuesday.

The senior California representative noted that while Egypt has no serious external threats to its sovereignty, Cairo continues to add weaponry and additional units to its massive war machine.

Past Egyptian buildups have always resulted in invasion and attempted annihilation of the Jewish state. The 1979 Camp David peace accord notwithstanding, statements made by Egyptian officials and state-controlled media indicate Cairo still views Israel as an enemy.

"Egyptian military exercises are ominously geared toward an Israeli enemy that doesn't obviously exist," Lantos said.

1. Cutting off US aid to Israel would do more to stop any war
over there.

13. How so?
There was war there before US aid. What makes you think ending aid would magically end it now?

He needs to work on his grammar, too.

But seriously, does this mean we've given up on getting a war
going with Iran or Syria? Are we starting to cast about for new
enemies?

I thought Egypt was going to police Gaza to help Israel out?

Who let Lantos off his meds again, anyway?

11. But you did comment on the post...
And of course there was nothing inane about the post you commented on. If the US stopped funding corrupt regimes in the Middle East, including that of Sharon, the world would probably be a lot less chaotic than it is now...

12. Well, you could argue that the attack on Lantos was "inane".
But this really is a bizarre comment Lantos has made. It
is self-serving posturing in the best case one can make for it.

So screw Lantos. In fact, screw all members of Congress.

14. It Is Indeed Bizarre, My Friend
It lacks even the tenuous contact with reality needed for a useful distortion....

7. This article is assinine
Mubarrak relies on his military just like Musharref does to stay in power. Cutting off his military pipeline would empower the fundamentalist radicals in his country and ultimately result in the fall of his regime.

It is Mubarrak's very dependency on American military aid that allows the American armed forces to operate unhindered through Suez and in the Red Sea. Hello!

There wouldn't have been peace with Egypt if his military hadn't been bought off.

9. Looks like it's really not "let bygones be bygones"
where Israel is concerned. I guess peace treaties don't mean much to Israel's neighbors.

"Egypt’s state-controlled media regularly demonizes the Jewish state in newspaper editorials and anti-Semitic television programs, despite being one of only two Arab states to have signed peace treaty with Israel."

But, but it's ONLY words, right?

10. So, incitement to hatred negates peace treaties?
You are aware that there's incitement to hatred carried out by ministers in the Israeli govt, right? How is that any different than that which you claim makes peace treaties ONLY words?
