UN overwhelmingly adopts resolution condemning West Bank fence
UN overwhelmingly adopts resolution condemning West Bank fence

By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent and Reuters

NEW YORK - The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted on Tuesday a resolution condemning Israel's West Bank separation fence, with 150 nations voting in favor of the draft, six nations opposing it and 10 abstaining.

The United States, Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau and Australia voted against the resolution.

Canada, Uruguay, Cameroon, Tonga, Vanuatu, El Salvador, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Nauru and the Solomon Islands abstained.

The assembly's vote, like the opinion of the International Court of Justice, is not legally binding, but both have symbolic value as international statements of support for the barrier's d.......

1. Its a Small World
Written by: Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman

It's a world of laughter
A world of tears
It's a world of hopes
And a world of fears
There's so much that we share
That it's time we're aware
It's a small world after all

There is just one moon
And one golden sun
And a smile means
Friendship to ev'ryone
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It's a small world after all

It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small, small world

2. Does Bush give a shit?
No, and neither does Kerry.

We'll be having terrorism for quite some time. We can't "liberate" oil-rich Iraq while letting Israel oppress the Palestinians. That kind of hypocrisy can get you killed.

And the next person who says Israel is a Democracy gets kicked in the teeth and thrown over to the Palestinian side of the wall.

3. Actually I think both do give a shit

You realize the ICG ruling and this vote is the first time the world has actually defied the new neocon world order. They are fighting back against the pods in both the republican and democratic parties and it is a good thing.

This is also a first step toward sanctions.

I thought for sure the Palestinians would lose on this vote and it is the first pleasant surprise I have had in a long time.

5. no, the UN always rules in favor of the Palestinians
Because those poor people are suffering.

that's why Israel is in violation of 68+ UN resolutions.

The US has historically favored Israel. The pro-Israel lobby influences both parties, but have slightly bigger sway over the Democrats. Those folks can make or break any election.

6. They get a swing vote
Historically they lose if you put them against the defense lobby (selling AWACS to Saudi Arabia).

They certainly win if they are pitted against normal people though.

8. This is not cause for hope
Like most of the UN's resolutions against Israel (all 60+), this will not carry any clout. Until it becomes clear that Israel's continued violation of international law carries the threat of sanctions or even military invasion, nothing will improve. Palestinians will continue to be erradicated, and the United States will still be at risk of terrorist attack. This will require an American administration not in the pocket of the Israel lobby, which sadly seems unlikely.

9. America isn't the only country that can put sanctions on Israel
While we do more weapons funding and trade, the EU actually buys more of their products. The ICG ruling and this vote in the UN signals that their will probably be trade sanctions coming from Asia and the EU.
