Israel Completes Rerouting of West Bank Barrier

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's Defense Ministry said Monday it had revised the route of part of its disputed West Bank barrier, a move that security sources have said would entail cutting through less occupied land.

A Defense Ministry spokeswoman said the new route for about 19 miles of the barrier near Jerusalem had been completed and was awaiting the approval of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz. <snip>

She declined to provide details of the new route, saying only that it conformed to a High Court decision in June that it must be moved to minimize hardship to Palestinians, thousands of whom have been cut off from schools, hospitals, relatives and farmland.

The precedent-setting ruling will likely apply to all sections of the barrier but the spokeswoman said the ministry had only rerouted sections singled out by the High Court. Israel says the barrier, expected to run over 385 miles, is being built to prevent Palestinian suicide bombers infiltrating from the West Bank into its cities where they have killed more than 450 people since 2000. <snip>

2. By annexing another country's land...
Why can't they just build it in Israel or on the Israel/Palestine border - the Green Line?

If they did, it'd work just as well & no-one would complain

3. Its current locaiton is not permanent. It can be traded for peace, if the
other side ever gets around to negotiating.

5. You didn't answer my question
Why didn't they just build in Israel/on the Green Line at the start?

If they did it would never have got to the ICJ

6. Because final borders are not determined except through negotiation.
The idea is to occupy the land on a non-permanent basis. Then they can bargain the land away for peace. Of course it's not their land, but it's not anyone else's either - not until final borders are established by negotiation.

7. Like those "temporary" settlements and outposts?
Do you actually believe that wall is supposed to be temporary? Seriously.

8. Most of it is actually chain link fence. So its location is modifiable.
The FACT of a fence is not going to change.

In the end, it will most likely end up near the Green Line.
