Israeli push kills 28 in Gaza
http://www.boston.com/news/world/middleeast/articles/2004/10/01/israeli_push_kills_28_in_gaza/

<snip>

"In the heaviest fighting in the Gaza Strip in two years, Israeli troops poured into Gaza yesterday and killed at least 28 Palestinians, many of them civilians, while Palestinian gunmen shot dead two Israeli soldiers and a Jewish settler who was taking her morning run.

Most of the Palestinians were killed in northern Gaza, where soldiers, backed by tanks and helicopters, swept through Palestinian towns and refugee camps in a major incursion that the government said was aimed at thwarting more rocket attacks on nearby Israeli communities like the one that killed two Israeli toddlers Wednesday.

News reports said more than 100 Palestinians were wounded in the Gaza fighting, including 12 in critical condition.

Security officials said the operation would probably be broader and more sustained than any that Israel has carried out in Gaza, a sign of Israeli anger at the deadly attack with homemade Qassam rockets against the town of Sderot. They did not rule out the possibility that troops would carve out a buffer zone in the area and remain there indefinitely."

1. The killing can carry on...Because Sharon controls the American people
“Every time we do something, you tell me America will do this and will do that... I want to tell you something very clear: Don’t worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it.”

— Ariel Sharon
Israeli Prime Minister
Knesset, Tel Aviv, October 3, 2001

3. I googled around & got this:
http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_article=34&x_context=2

<snip>

"The hoax originated with an October 3, 2001 press release from the pro-Hamas group, the Islamic Association for Palestine. It said:

An acrimonious argument erupted during the Israeli cabinet weekly session last week between Ariel Sharon and his foreign Minister Shimon Peres during which Sharon reportedly yelled at Peres, saying “don’t worry about American pressure, we control America.”

Notably, in the same press release, the direct quotation “we control America” changed to “we the Jewish people control America.”

IAP wrote:

According the Israeli Hebrew radio, Col Yisrael Wednesday, Peres warned Sharon that refusing to heed incessant American requests for a cease-fire with the Palestinians would endanger Israeli interests and turn the US against us. At this point, a furious Sharon reportedly turned toward Peres, saying “...I want to tell you something clear, don’t worry about American pressure on Israel, we the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it.”

According to the IAP press release, the statement was reported on Kol Yisrael. However, CAMERA’s calls to Kol Yisrael confirmed that no such broadcast occurred."

4. Total bullshit
Not even the slightest grain of truth to it.

The general sentiment is, however, recognised by some in Israel, where headlines like "Sharon Threatens, Bush Surrenders" have appeared in mainstream papers (Ma'ariv).
