Elusive Hamas leader gives himself up

Israeli forces captured the elusive head of the Hamas military wing in the West Bank city of Hebron yesterday.

Israeli troops surrounded the safe house where Imad Kawasme was hiding. He surrendered after the building came under fire.

Kwasme emerged waving a white flag and was led away, blindfolded and wearing only a pair of large underpants.

The surrender of such a senior Hamas member, one of Israel's most elusive and wanted targets, is a rare occurrence. The organisation's militants in Hebron and Nablus have usually preferred a fight to the death.

Israel has all but destroyed the infrastructure of Hamas based in the Gaza Strip in the past 18 months, killing almost all its founding members. It has also captured or killed many of the most senior leaders in the West Bank.
