Israel Releases Top Hamas Member from Jail
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=worldNews&storyID=6853342

<snip>

"Israel freed Hamas's top West Bank leader Thursday after two years in jail and he swiftly called on the Jewish state to release all Palestinian inmates as a condition for any truce.

Emerging from a military prison near the West Bank city of Ramallah, Hassan Yusef said he would go on working on behalf of Hamas and urged the militant Islamic group to pursue its armed struggle against Israel.

"No truce and no peace and no calm can be achieved unless all prisoners will be freed," a gaunt Yusef told reporters at the gates of the prison, where he was greeted by relatives holding flowers.

According to the Haaretz newspaper's Web site, Israel's Shin Bet security service was unable to provide evidence connecting Yusef to Hamas attacks."

Yusef had been jailed for his ties to Islamic charities affiliated with Hamas.

Yusef was arrested by Israeli soldiers in August 2002 and sentenced to 28 months in jail for helping funnel donations to Hamas.

Wow, he was jailed for having ties with a charity, Shin Bet could produce NO evidence to say he was behind anything more sinister and they released a whole MONTH before the end of his sentance.

From Maariv International

Yusuf’s family told NRG Maariv that they were not surprised to hear about his release. “This was his 12th incarceration in Israeli prisons. During the past year, he was held in solitary confinement and we weren’t allowed to visit him or speak to him by phone”, his mother said.

She added that during the past several days, an official of the Israel Prison Service called the family and said they had to pay NIS 30,000, otherwise he would be kept in prison for another year. She said Hamas helped the family pay the sum.

The Israel Prison Service said in response that Yusuf’s attorney met him in recent days and told him that according to the court decision, NIS 30,000 must be paid otherwise he would have to serve an additional eight months.
