Israeli Forces Shell Palestinian School in Khan Yunis
Edited on Mon Dec-13-04 05:27 PM by catbert836
<snip>
As a result, 6 schoolchildren were wounded as they were in the yard and a seventh one was wounded when she was inside a classroom. The children were evacuated in civilian cars to Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. Their wounds were described by medical sources as moderate. Following this attack, the school was vacated as schoolchildren were extremely terrified. The same school was subject to a number of attacks by IOF in the past. For instance, on 25 September 2004, 11-year-old Madeline Hamdan Buraika was wounded by a live bullet in the forehead when she was sitting on her desk.

<snip>
According to preliminary investigations conducted by PCHR, at approximately 09:10 on Sunday, 12 December 2004, IOF positioned in military posts in the vicinity of "Neve Dekalim", "Gadid" and "Gan Aur" settlements, west of Khan Yunis, opened fire at Palestinian houses and schools to the east and north of the aforementioned settlement. An artillery shell hit the sport yard of an elementary school, approximately 600 meters to the northeast of the settlement.
</snip>

<snip>
Palestinian educational institutions have been frequently attacked by IOF, and PCHR has documented dozens of such attacks, which injured dozens of schoolchildren while they were at school. In one of such attacks, on 12 October 2004, 11-year-old Ghadeer Jaber Mukhaimer was seriously wounded by a live bullet in the chest when she was sitting on her desk at an UNRWA elementary school in Khan Yunis refugee camp. She died at the hospital on the following day.

4. PCHR are not armament experts...
so they could be talking of a tank shell, which is much more likely.

Hint: This is one case where "facts on the ground" (eg. A big hole) belie attempts to say it did not happen. Once again, the exact part number and serial number of the ordanance used is not required to determine whether an incident happened at all.

5. "You claim ei routinly lies..."
may I suggest posting an example of that,and then anyone on DU can examine your claim and decide for themselves?

On the use of the word "artillery",here's the Washington Post doing the same thing;

"Israel Attack Kills 10 at Gaza Protest
Army Says Shots Were Warning; Children Among Dozens of Wounded

By Glenn Frankel
Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, May 20, 2004; Page A01

RAFAH, Gaza Strip, May 19 -- An Israeli helicopter gunship and a tank fired rockets and artillery shells at Palestinian protesters Wednesday as they marched toward a heavily populated neighborhood in the southern Gaza Strip. At least 10 Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded, many of them children, as explosives and shrapnel ripped through the crowd. "

7. whats the discussion?
Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 04:31 AM by pelsar
if its accuracy, then the original artical and washington post are inaccurate as to the ordance used: tanks nor helicopters fire artillery shells...

Its doesnt matter whos says it, and no matter how loud:

(hint artillery, fires artillery shells)

8. It's poor use of language.....

on the part of these journos.
Although, artillery=heavy mounted guns,& tanks=heavy mounted guns,therefore tanks fire artillery shells.It would've been clearer if the article said "tank shells".

9. the reason it bugs me.......
we all carry lots of extra baggage with word..especially in this conflict. When I (and I suspect many others) hear of artillary use by the IDF many of immediatly equate that with the IDF artillary barage in the lebanese war (Qana) that killed 100+

it doesnt take much to be accurate.

In fact what that does is by using the wrong terminology (which increases the "misunderstandings" be in on purpose or not) it simply demonizes that group, something soldiers do in war and something that people who dont like war try to avoid.....since we know that both sides consist of real people.....

16. I'm not convinced...

as to what is 'bugging' you.

Three posts on the topic all couched in various forms of denial and rather drool discussion on terminology.

I suppose what "bugs" others dealing directly with the topic is the attack on a school, period. No one needs to "demonize" anyone who would attack a school, the act itself is sufficient proof.

On Edit: Grammar

Edited on Tue Dec-14-04 03:46 AM by gottaB
"just today five Palestinian students received shrapnel wounds when an Israeli tank shell exploded in the back yard of a school in Khan Yunis."

Is this sort of thing rare?
