Small town in southeastern Brazil to honor Yasser Arafat
SAO PAULO, Brazil - The New Year's Eve celebrations in the small community of Paraiba do Sul will honor a figure the town's mayor says hasn't been honored anywhere else in the West - the late Yasser Arafat.

---

``It is the first time a memorial in Arafat's honor has been built in the Western world,'' Onofre said.

``We decided to build the memorial to demonstrate our solidarity with the Palestinian cause,'' Onofre said by phone. ``We hope the memorial will encourage people to discuss the Middle Eastern crisis, which is the cause of all the violence and turmoil afflicting the world today.''

Onofre acknowledged that the Arafat memorial has raised a storm of protest, ``from representatives of Brazil's Jewish community.''

1. How odd
Certainly there are better ways to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian cause than to honor a man who stole millions from the Palestinians!

3. debating the theft of money
Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 10:47 AM by King Mongo
Honorable Elise

If Arafat stole money from Palestinians, then why does Arafat not have a ranch like Sharon?

When Saddam gave Arafat a personal present of 100 million dollars, why did Arafat not buy a ranch next to Sharon's?

I don't understand why Arafat didn't live a life of luxury.

Honorable Elise, critics of Arafat have yet to tell me what they would have done to hide resistance money from the Israelis. How would you hide money from the Israelis if you were in the same situation?

Your humble servant

4. not debating the theft from the Palestinians
You ask why Arafat does not have a ranch like Sharon?

Cannot you stick to the OP?

As to a life of luxury: check out Mrs. Arafat's lifestyle which was bought and paid for from the sweat and pain of the Palestinians.

17. Don't blame men for female problems
Honorable Elise

The small community of Paraiba do Sul did not honor Suha. It honored Arafat. Suha is not Arafat. We are talking about Arafat, not Suha.

If Arafat stole so much money, why didn't he use it for himself? Why do you blame Arafat for Suha's greed? Are men really always responsible for the activities of their women?

Why did Arafat not buy a ranch next to Sharon's?

Your humble servant

Do you really believe Arafat was not in league with his wife when they were stealing from the Palestinians? Are you that naive or are you simply that mysoginstic?

46. Conspiracy theories
Elise, I do not know what happened between Arafat and Suha. I really have no idea. Neither do you, unless you can prove otherwise.

Many things are possible in relationships and without the court of law, any assumption could be true or false.

I'm simply not going to believe a conspiracy theory simply because it sounds cool and I am aware that men sometimes suffer from the greed of their wives.

Nevertheless, if Arafat had really wanted to keep the 100 million dollars that Saddam gave him for himself, then I'm sure that he would have purchased a ranch next to Sharon's and maybe a nice car to go with it and left Ramallah for some nice resort in Hawaii.

2. The secret to not being one-sided
Well, not everyone is one-sided. :)

People should not forget that Israelis not only promoted "terrorists" to positions like prime minister, but buried them in Jerusalem too!

Why should Arafat not receive the same honors?

6. Again, your post is off-point.
They are honoring a man who purported to care for his people ..... the same people they claim to be honoring ..... we are not discussing terrorism on this thread, we are discussing theft and betrayal by Arafat and the idiotic idea of a country honoring the man rather than the people.

18. Unanswered questions about money usage and hiding tactics
Well, if we are talking about theft, then stop blaming Arafat for Suha's problems. Just because some women are greedy, that doesn't mean that men are responsible.

Now back to my previous question, if Arafat stole money, why did he not use it?

Why did Arafat hide money from the Israelis?

How would you have hidden money from the Israelis?

Please, honorable Elisa, please attempt to answer my questions and don't blame men for female problems.

Kind regards
King Mongo

29. WOW
That's 2 responses on one thread that should have been deleted.

It has been proven Arafat stole money and his wife was his partner.

You perseverate with your women-hating/blaming tactics.

So: let me get this straight,

1. Arafat was a wonderful guy
2. He was a victim to his wife's avarice

emkay, if that works for you, I certainly hope you never marry. LOL

48. You must admit that some women are greedy
>>You perseverate with your women-hating/blaming tactics.

So, you are trying to tell me all women are not greedy, that all women never cheat on their men and that all women do not use tricks to pressure their men to give them money.

Well, Elise, a reality check says that some women are indeed greedy, some women do cheat on their men and some women do use tricks to get money from their men. Men are often so silly that they give women lots of money simply so that women will like them.

As for Suha, we know that she is greedy. There's no question about that. Why do you defend this greedy woman while blaming Arafat?

>>It has been proven Arafat stole money

Proven by whom? Some guy in the Likud party? Show me the proof. I don't believe something simply because some radical Israeli said it.

It's hard to beat a Nobel anyway; but I expect the statue is nice,
and this hamlet has a clever mayor, and I can't really see that bashing
Arafat at this point is likely to do the Israeli cause much good.

Your are correct that Arafat could not stop illegal settlements or slow their growth. Such was simply beyond his ability. Arafat could really do nothing to help his people and no Palestinian can because only Israelis can do this.

Arafat could have done plenty. The problem is he believed in his original covenant that Israel must be completely obliterated. If he had come to the realization that a compromise would have worked, he would have been murdered long before his death last year.

45. The non-sense about destroying Israel
People who want to destroy Israel don't sit with Israelis at a table while discussing complex issues like the refugee problem.

I don't believe that anyone wants to seriously destroy Israel because destroying Israel is simply unrealistic. It's not going to happen. So, the idea of someone wanting to destroy Israel is nothing other than worthless propaganda used for some political purpose.

Edited on Sat Jan-01-05 12:17 PM by King Mongo
Honorable Jim Sagle

It is true that shit cannot remove illegal settlements. In fact, shit is produced by illegal settlers and grows as they expand. Seriously, the more that settlements expand, the more the shit stinks, especially given the limited natural resources in the West Bank that are used to store the shit or flush it away.

Kind regards
King Mongo

27. background information to my question
I understand that this is a very sensitive issue to discuss, so I'll try with more background information to explain the situation.

Definitions:
Yesha = Gaza, Judea & Samaria, also known as Gaza and the West Bank
Israel = the land west of the green line
Eretz Israel = Israel + Yesha
Jews = people around the world who believe in Judaism and/or attacked to the semite part of their ancestory
Palestinians = the people who lived in the area known as Palestine
prior to the creation of a "Jewish" state
illegal settlements = Jewish-only cities in Yesha which are
sometimes protected with walls that exclude
those Palestinians living in Yesha, thus,
properly labelled as Jewish-only cities

The probability is great that if a Palestinian living in Yesha attempts to use a restrooom in a Jewish-only illegal settlement in Yesha, then the Palestinian civilian will be shot and killed. The person who killed the Palestinian civilian will most likely likely not be tried in the court of law.

Now, given the proper background information to demonstrate the problem as it exists to this day, I ask the following question:

Why can Palestinians not use Jewish-only restrooms in Yesha?

It is fine with me if Jews live in Yesha as long as they are treated equally as the other people who are living there. If Jews live in Yesha, then they must share their cities with Palestinians, allowing Palestinians to share their restroooms.

I hope that I explained this sensitive issue well enough so that there are no misunderstandings.

Kind regards
King Mongo

Racism is sickening, not the act of speaking out against such.

Why build cities in Yesha without giving the indigenous population citizenship and equality? Should not the practice of democracy be encouraged instead of spitted upon?

I was corrected some time ago by another poster (a pro-Israeli partisan, no less) here for using Eretz Israel in the same way you are using it. The term Eretz Israel simply means land of Israel and may mean simply Israel Proper or Israel Proper, the West Bank and Gaza, depending on the speaker.

Since then, I have adopted the term Greater Israel to convey that meaning. Most people understand that I believe that neither the West Bank nor Gaza are now or have ever been part of the modern state of Israel, that Israel has no legal permanent claim over the occupied territories and that there is no such thing as a legal Israeli settlement in the occupied territories; it is still a convenient term for some ideas, promoted by the Israeli right, to the contrary.
